Skills Test Question

I am in the final stages of the interviewing process for a large corporation. The HR dept did not request a skills test, the VP who I met with did not request a skillls, I am now meeting with departing assistant and she feels that SHE should give some type of skills test to the final appllicants. Is this proper? I have nothing to hide, but if HR didn't request it can she ?

That's a bit odd. Who is the hiring person?

When some people leave their job they, sometimes, want to prove they were the best at their job and try to sabotage candidates to prove they were the best.

I would contact the HR Dept and ask them.

She certainly can request it, as long as it's something they are giving all candidates and it's something that's been proven to be job related.

However I would say it's unorthodox since the people who you would actually be working for aren't asking for it.

If you are uncomfortable with it, I would mention it casually to the HR person you met with.

Like "You didn't mention this in the initial interview, can you tell me a little more about it." Just to make sure they know what she's doing.

I've found over the years that most HR departments have no idea what skills are needed for the jobs at their company. At the companies I've worked for (all Engineering-type, so it may be different), HR just did the preliminary stuff.... background checking, salary negotiations, etc. The department people would give the actual skills test/questions. HR has no idea what anyone in Engineering does.

UGH no skills test tbut all she did was speak negatively about the position and mentioned that it requires HEAVY excel which was never staed in the job description. I am proficient in it, but far from being really advancedChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I pride myself on being an abnormal HR person, who actually knows the business of my company.

With regard the skills test, do you know if it was actually the assistant's decision to administer it, or was she asked by her manager to give the test? As a general rule, I wouldn't go back to the hiring manager or HR and ask if it's legit. Instead, maybe mention it to one of them in a follow-up. "It was great meeting with Myrtle, and I'm confident that you'll find the results of my skills test more than satisfactory for the position".

This gives the manager the opportunity to say "What?" or to go along with the testing.

i wouldn't even question it. If a skills test is what you have to do and you really want the job, take it.

Most agencies administer these tests and they are simple. You should be able to nail it.

They might not give you a test because unless they have the software to test you, they will have to come up with some sort of test and that takes time.

Either way, I wouldn't think twice about it. If excel is required, they owe it to themselves to find out if you can do it.
