If you are a smoker can you answer my poll

So we were at my Godmother's house last night for a party for my mom. I would say about half of the people their were smokers including my parents and my godmother her DH. My DD and DS were the only kids at the party and I was kinda shocked that nobody would go outside to smoke for the kids sake. I mean all the doors and windows were closed so it seemed like their was just a cloud. Then I went downstairs thinking it might be better and it was until the men went down to watch a soccer game and well they started to smoke there too. They did crack the door open a few times but it was too cold. Luckly DD was sleeping in my cousins room that is in the basement and it was almost fresh air.

I guess I just assumed that since my parents do this when I go their that the rest of my family would do the same.

So I am curious, if you are hosting a party and their will be infants and toddlers there will you and your guests smoke outside?

i quit 15 months ago, but back when i did smoke, i always went outside when there were kids around, and even then, i'd try to hide it and be very nonconspicuous about it. i'd also go outside if there were nonsmokers there, too. Even when i was a smoker (and i was for 10 years), i could never understand the complete disregard that smokers had.

I smoke. But, I will not smoke in MY house if there are kids in it. I will not smoke in someonelses house (even if they are smoking) if there are kids in it. I think that is just takcy. why subject them to it?

ETA: If you are a non smoker coming into MY house and kids are NOT present, I WILL be smoking in MY home. Untill someone pays my rent/mortage I could careless. JMHO

Also as a smoker people who DONT smoke are shocked when they see me smoke in here, it NEVER smells like smoke. I HATE the way a cigarette smells.

In my family my aunts all smoke, and whenever we go to their homes, they always smoke inside. It's like they take the cue from the home-owner...If the owner smokes and smokes inside the home, everyone does. If the home-owner does not smoke, they go outside.

I agree 100%. This bothers me - A LOT! I cannot tell you how angry this makes me. ESPECIALLY when there are children around. The adults can leave if they want, the kids cant.Chat Icon

Here's my opinion.....if you're paying my mortgage then you can tell me when and how I can smoke in MY house. For the record Joe and i both smoke and it doesn't matter if there is 1 other person or 50 other people if even 1 of those people are non-smokers we do not allow smoking in our house. We set out mittens, hats, and a coffee can outside on our bench so smokers can stay wrm, but if we ared having a party with close friends who also smoke it's fine if we ALL smoke inthe house. I CAN NOT STAND non-smokers who think they have a right to tell me if and how I can smoke in my OWN house. Let the flames begin.......Chat Icon

Wow....I guess Im surprised as an ex and still sometimes smoker that someone who ever ever ever smoke around a child.

I personally, would not. If any child came to my house when I was a smoker, i went outside and would now that I have a child expect the same from people...in their house or wherever.....Respect and the health of my child is more important then a nicotine fix......whether you pay the mortgage or not.

but then again, i would not be close to or visit anyone who didnt go outside away from my child, so maybe its a dead point...

Personally, I can't see why someone would WANT to smoke in a house. Chat Icon DH has been smoke free for about 3 months (yay!) and even when he did smoke, he never ever smoked inside. His reason? It stunk the house up. But he also says, "It's a no brainer...today we're smarter. Kids shouldn't see it and think it's okay!"

I am a reformed smoker but my DH still smokes. He only smokes outside, never in our house. If I know people smoke in their house I don't bring my children over. I don't expect them to change their ways in their own home (besides the fact that just because they wouldn't do it while children are present, if they do it every other time the house would still be crawling with second hand smoke every where anyway) It is for this very reason that I stopped going to my aunt's house for Christmas. My family completely understands.

Perhaps I need to clarify........If EVERY single person at my house is a smoker then yes we smoke in the house, but if even 1 person is a non-smoker we go outside, and children are non-smokers. Hope that helps to clarify.

Before I had kids I never minded smoking in the house. Like I said I grew up with my parents smoking and they never went outside.
I would never tell someone to go outside to smoke at their own house, I think that's rude. At my parents house I would just open everything up and my dad got the hint or would follow my mother out (but that's my parents). When the people who hosted the party are at my parents house with us they will follow my parents out. I also never allow smoking in my house (I guess that explains why they only came to my previous home twice Chat Icon ). Anyway, my eyes and nostrils were burning and I figured it was the same or worse for the kids.
I don't think anyone should get flamed, its your opinion and your home but I was just curious what other people did.

Re: If you are a smoker can you answer my poll

My husband is a smoker & he goes outside or in the basement if it's extremely cold out.
My Aunt came over for Thanksgiving & asked where the smoking section was. I pointed out the door & said out there. She thought I was joking. But, I insisted.

When i was a kid i gre up with my parents smoking in the house, in the car noone ever went outside. About 3 or 4 years ago my parents stopped smoking in the house. I ALWAYS go outside to smoke. And if my niece or nephew are around or other kids i rarely even go outside to smoke. There is no reason to smoke around kids.

I'm a former smoker and even when both DH and I were smoking, we stopped smoking in the house (way before even our son was born). I just don't like smoking indoors period (except in bars but that's over Chat Icon ) I would always go outside and smoke as far away from children as possible.

I would never allow smoking in my house when there are children present.

HOWEVER, I would NEVER expect someone ELSE to follow my rules in their home. And I would never assume, tell them to, or expect them to ban smoking in their home because I brought MY child over. I don't pay their mortgage, I don't own their home. I have the right to get up and leave if they decide that they want to smoke in their home with children around. And that's what I would do.

I am a smoker and always go outside -- I don't want my house to smell like smoke and it's also out of respect to my husband, who is a non-smoker.....If I went to someone's house and they smoked inside (and if I had children), I would be annoyed, but I wouldn't tell them to put it out or go outside....It's their house, not mine, and I would have the choice of not going there anymore.

Both DH and I are smokers and have NEVER EVER smoked in our apartment.
I don't want my house to smell like cigarettes, so I don't smoke in my own house...
I would be annoyed if I went to someone else's house and they smoked inside...but unfortunately it's their house and they have the right to do whatever they want.
I would be less likely to go there though because they do smoke in their home!

Re: If you are a smoker can you answer my poll

I'm not a smoker, so I didn't answer the poll. I'd NEVER allow ANYONE to smoke in my house or my car for any reason - EVER! Kids or no kids. I hate it and it would never be allowed in my house or car.

That said, if I had kids at someone's house where they were allowing people to smoke indoors, I'd leave. Enough said. It might offend someone, but perhaps that what it will take to get the point across. I don't think I could subject a child to that...

I'm not judging what YOU did at all - just stating how I would handle it. I don't think I'd take my children or remain with my children anywhere where people were smoking indoors. I'd at least ASK that everyone go outside to smoke... I know it's easier said than done when family is involved -- but I'd make it a policy from here on out that your children won't go there if people will be smoking inside.

I'd leave if I had children with me. It might be their house and their choice, but it'd be MY kids' health and well being (and behavior I don't want them observing)... JMHO.

Re: If you are a smoker can you answer my poll

i quit about two months ago... but didn't smoke inside my house even when i was a smoker. so, i definitely wouldn't have been smoking in my house with kids there. generally, i always tried to not smoke in front of them (even if we were outdoors).

I think it comes down to the homeowner. Would it be thoughtful for them not to smoke in front of kids? Even probably the "right" thing to do? Yeah - in my book - yes. But, you also can't tell someone what to do in his/her house. Then it comes down to making a choice about whether you want to go there or not if this is how it will always be. Y
