Food shopping today was a real eye-opener...

It's no wonder we have such an obesity epidemic in this country.

As per my RE, I'm going to start eating healthier--eating a protein-heavy diet, lots of whole grains when I do eat carbs, and cutting out sugar, for the most part.

Let me tell you...

Trying to find foods that were sugar-free was quite a challenge. Sugar is in EVERYTHING!!!! I figured I couldn't go wrong with yogurt--SOMEONE must make yogurt that uses Spenda...right???

It took me 10 minutes to locate that one brand. ONE brand!!! Even WW yogurt is laden with sugar!

It's a really sad thing. It took me about 2 hours food shopping today. It just really make me Chat Icon and realize why America is not only obese, but there are so many Type 2 diabetics!!!!!!

Rant over!

I know. People really do eat a lot of crap. It doesn't surprise me that that the rate of diabetes and heart disease has increased with the increased consumption of processed foods, sugar and carbohydrates.

With yogurt, I usually buy plain yogurt and put fresh fruit and 1 packet of stevia in instead. I also try to buy certain things organic and things from Trader Joe's that don't contain added hormones, etc.

It can be tough buying healthy food because you really have to read labels and then you usually end up paying more money.

Most light yogurts are made with artificial sweetner- not neccesarly SPlena, usually aspertame.

ALL yogurts will have sugar in them if you read the labels- the milk and fruit naturally contain sugars that you cant avoid.

ETA- I like dannon light and fit, it has 60 calories per container.

There is also a difference, imo, between high fructose corn syrup and sugar. I'd choose the latter.

Very true...but I was just diagnosed with Insulin Resistance (basically pre-diabetes). I have to try to stay away from ANY sugar except for simple sugars.

Much easier said than actually done...

I think about this regularly. I get so upset with food ingredients. My DH thinks I am a little crazy about it.

I only shop at Wild by Nature now. There is no high fructose corn syrup and Enriched flour in ANYTHING. I don't care how expensive it is, it is better than eating all the crap that is put in the food in a regular food store.

not sure if you are able to eat honey or not, but I use it so much.

I buy plain yogurt, mix honey and berries. comes out great. I can't wait for my baby to get the okay to eat honey...his little yogurts have sugar in it.

I've had similar problems finding no or low-sugar yogurt. I've had good luck with Dannon's Light & Fit Carb and Sugar Control yogurts - they only have about 3g sugar.

That's the one I finally wound up buying.

Thanks for all of the suggestions, I'll have to try them out!

Dannon light is so yummy. Great thing is they have so many varieties. If you throw them in the freezer and wait a while...Wahlah...you now have FROZEN YOGURT without all the added sugar and guilt.

Also, the cottage cheese singles with the side fruit are soooo good. I find I don't even need all of the mixed fruit. I use about 1/2 of what they give. My favorite is the apples and cinnamon and blueberry. Try to stay strong and positive! Chat Icon

Re: Food shopping today was a real eye-opener...

I can totally relate to this.

I had gestational diabetes with each of my pregnancies (and each baby was over 9lbs), my father was diabetic, I am approaching 40 and I am fat. I am TERRIFIED to go have my blood sugar tested because it seems almost inevitable that I am going to be diabetic in the very near future.

I have been trying to avoid sugar as well.. and it is ridiculously difficult. I am sitting her trying to plan my meals for the week and I feel like I am going to cry because working around the restrictions is crazy!

Compounding the issue is that I don't want to eat toxic replacements like Splenda or Nutrasweet. So I am just left with NOTHING sweet. :(

I hope you will let me know if you find any good tips or products.Chat Icon
