Which is worse for the environment?

I bought the seventh generation dishwashing liquid- it just doesn't cut it.
Dawn lasts way longer.
Is it better to buy vegetable based detergent 3 times as frequently, thusly creating the waste of more plastic bottles? Or is it better to buy petroleum based Dawn way less frequently, and consume less plastic waste?

Both dawn and SG have recyclable bottles.

Re: Which is worse for the environment?

i'd say it's a tie however, if you want to also factor in the cost to you...Dawn wins.

Re: Which is worse for the environment?

Have you tried Method products? That might be a good compromise. While I haven't tried the dishwashing liquid myself, a friend has and really likes it. (I use a bunch of their other products and really like them.)

Before you give up on non-petroleum-based products altogether, try Ecover. It's way better than 7th Gen.

I agree that Ecover is a better product.

Re: Which is worse for the environment?

I gave up on environmental dish soaps...I tried them all and none work like Palmolive or Dawn - to me it's less plastic waste so I stick with the Palmolive.

Re: Which is worse for the environment?

I use Method or 7th generation also b/c of all the crap thats in that stuff that remains on your dishes.....that you ingest.

Only some ingredients need to be shown on the label where as MEthod and other green labels freely put ALL ingredients on theres.

Dont you want to know why there are so many bubbles???

Its funny you say this... I was shopping with a friend the other day & she was looking at the Clorox anywhere spray & read the ingredients. It said something ridiculous like; water, cleaning agents, and then some chemical for scent. W T F Are the cleaning agents???

Re: Which is worse for the environment?

You know that saying... Choosing your battles...

I'm all for green efforts obviously. But I still use Dawn.

Don't forget that Dawn has been donating product for wildlife affected by oil spills for decades.

I also use it for gardening. My plants don't seem to mind it at all and I spray them with it routinely.

Until I can fully investigate what Method or Seventh Generation is going to do with my plants, I'm sticking with Dawn for now.

Re: Which is worse for the environment?

Why bother worrying about the environment at this point?

You are about to give birth to the biggest drain on the environment you will ever see.

Between the garbage, the diapers, the amount of water you will use.... I say go out and make a huge styrofoam bonfire right now, and spray your hair with Aqua Net....

Just not too close to the bonfire. That won't be pretty... Chat Icon

Re: Which is worse for the environment?

I use the seventh generation, it gets the dishes very clean. We have that huge paper carton, I think it will last us forever.

I find method products to be really good as well. I have their granite cleaner, wood cleaner, hardwood floor cleaner, window cleaner, all purpose cleaner, hand soap, and dish soap. I haven't used their dishwasher stuff.

Dawn has been around forever. My grandma uses it and she is knocking on the door to 90. Grandma takes happy pills, eats whatever she feels like and drinks everyday. Rock on Grandma! Unless a "greener" option proves itself to not kill me, I am sticking with Dawn.

Let us not forget that Dawn is manufactured by Proctor & Gamble - one of the largest manufacturers...who also happen to kill thousands of animals for "testing" purposes. No thanks.

Sorry, I don't understand this statement. You think one of these products would kill you?

Ingredients in method dish soap:

corn alcohol, table salt, citirc acid, aloe vera gel, vitamin e, fragrance oil, purified water, biodegradeable surfactants

Dawn's ingredients:
(well, the ones they tell you, anyway)

water, sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium pareth-23, sulfate C-12-14-16, dimethyl amine oxide, SD alcohol, undeceth-9, propylene glycol, cyclohexandiamine, polyacetate, protease, fragrance, FD&C blue, no phosphate

And biodegradeable surfactants is what? At least I know all the elements and how many are used in Dawn.

You dont know all the ingreiedents in Dawn...They only list "some" and they say that the rest are "trade secret" and are by law allowed ot not list them as so a competitor doesnt steal them.

I really dont think, Not trying to be rude or funny, but your grandparents didnt live long lives thanks to dawn...

Its sooo weird how defensive the arguements get over this stuff.

I guess I choose to use more organic products b/c I have a small baby and I dont want residue of those above weird naming ingredients to be ingested by him...

Re: Which is worse for the environment?

method works just as well as dawn or palmolive IMO.... love the grapefruit scent!
to scrub a pot, I LOVE LOVE LOVE Ecover's version of softscrub. it gets stuck on junk off quickly, and is made with harmless clay Chat Icon I then wash the pot with more method.
