How much stock.........

do you put into what others say about a particular place and what "they heard" it's like to work there?

Especially if what they say doesn't really apply to your situation?

Reason I ask:

My old boss called me over the weekend. She hadn't been in when I resigned from my previous job, because of a death in her family.

Anyways, she wished me lots of luck but said that the person whose job I took over told her she was resigning because she felt "overworked" because of the fact "that she had 2 little kids at home".

She told me to be sure to set my boundaries so they don't make me work zillions of hours and oversee things that are not my responsibility.

1.) I don't have kids, don't plan on having any for at least another couple years, and when that happens, I would definitely be reconsidering work options.
2.) I live 15 minutes from my new office, about 30 when we move this spring so commuting is not a big issue anymore.
3.) I actually like going into the office a few hours before "business hours" so I can get work done undisturbed.
4.) I stay till 5 or 6 anyways, even when I go in early.
5.) I heard the previous person resigned for other reasons from people who actually work where I am going.

you are never going to get the truth unless you have a friend on the inside.

You have to go with your gut and set your own rules. Life is a gamble sometimes and even with all the research you can still end up hating the job.

Who knows, you may end up loving it!!

Well, so far I really like my job and I've only been there 2 days. Day 2, the state walked in to audit our program. They will be back first thing in the AM!

I've also gotten a lot of inside info from people that I work with, and overall, I am really pleased with my decision to come to my new job.
