Cruise ship Guaranteed Room Rate
Has anyone booked a Guarantee room where you are guaranteed a room in that category or better but you don't get your room until you check in?
DH & I are looking into a cruise & we are finding a lot of the balcony rooms are Guaranteed Rooms...
Opinions....TIA!

Re: Cruise ship Guaranteed Room Rate
We did once and were bumped up about 3-4 floors. Just make sure you are happy with what you are actually paying for in case that's what you end up with.

We are happy with our selection since it is a balcony room. It is the cheapest rate one but there were rooms available up until Yesterday. Now they are all guaranteed rooms...

Re: Cruise ship Guaranteed Room Rate
Yes. We got upgraded a category or two (the rooms were the same just a different area of the boat or something??)

Re: Cruise ship Guaranteed Room Rate
It is a hit or miss deal. I have heard of a few great experiences and a couple of horror stories.
The good experiences have been: great upgrade great location but same category booked. upgraded to a suite
The bad experiences: - -they overbooked the ship and some guaranteed bookings were bumped off the boat -people got the worst location on the boat - read VERY loud room that was the worst cabin on board -people were downgraded to a lower category room (they were given compensation but still).
Usually I hear most people who book a category get that category or maybe one better.
I think it depends on how good the deal is whether it is worth the chance. If you can only afford an inside cabin but the balcony guarantee is only a few dollars more - but the regular balcony cabin is a lot more then go for it. But you have to be prepared to take what you get and not be disappointed. If you heart is set on a category or location it isn't a good deal.
BTW have you checked out sites like bestpricecruises and cruise compete Sometimes you can get the best deals on these sites - I have used the first one to book 3 cruises and my family has book about 5 from them as well. Usually they have the best price around.

Re: Cruise ship Guaranteed Room Rate
Actually we are booking through Smart Cruiser
It was the lowest price we found. There are plenty of balcony rooms left & we might just get the rate where we can pick our room but I was just searching around to see if the GUAR rooms are worth it...I guess if your heart is not really set on a balcony, then it is worth the shot but since we TRULY want one for the time frame we are gone, it is better to just book what we know we will have...

Re: Cruise ship Guaranteed Room Rate
I don't understand- if it's "guaranteed room" how can you get bumped off the boat? I thought it meant that the room you book is the minimum you will get and it could only go up from there Guess I was wrong?!?!

Re: Cruise ship Guaranteed Room Rate
I do it all the time and I always get a better room.
My parents who also cruise alot, usually do Guaranteed Room Rate as well.
I have never heard of getting bumped of the boat.

Well apparently what happened in the past and it has happened to others before (see it on cruisecritic a few times) - they oversell the boat - If you book a guarentee sometimes you get a room # immediately sometimes you don't get one until you get to the dock. What apparently happened was I guess (I wasn't on the ship so I can't tell you personally) they oversold - and sold more rooms (too many guarentees) than they actually had available.
It is not common - but it has happened.
