I love my Betty Crocker Big Red Book...it's all so easy and all the recipes are basic (meatballs, sauce, etc.) It ranges from appetizers to desserts and even has how to pick meat and fruit, what spices are good for.

ME, too! I love it. Some of the Rachael Ray 30 minute meals books are good.

I have 365 meals or something like that and it has been great. Although her stuff always takes longer than 30 minutes for meChat Icon

Kraft Foods has great recipes on line and you can register to recieve their FREE Food & Family magazine which has really nice, easy recipes.

Re: Cook Book for a beginner?

look on foodnetwork.com first and trial their recipes. You can search by chef. If you find you like them, then go out and buy the book. I have not bought a book in YEARS because you can get the recipes for free there.

i agree with everybody else- the betty crocker one is a good "classic" one to have with a lot of the basics in there....

i also LOVE my rachel ray 30 minute meals ones. DH and i credit her with us liking to cook- LOL her recipes are easy and really good, and it just gives you confidence to keep going with the cooking thing Chat Icon

All of Rachel Ray's are easy recipes, but not much in the way of pics. The Joy of Cooking can seem daunting, and again, no pics, but they actually tell you "how" to cook, not just recipes. It's my cooking bible. Chat Icon

A good one with pictures is the Better Homes and Gardens one (the red & white plaid one that everyone and their mom seems to have in their kitchen).

Re: Cook Book for a beginner?

I like the Better Homes and Gardens original one - the one in the red and white checked binder.

The recipes are pretty simple and it has all the standard American dishes - potroast, chicken, mac & cheese, etc. and there are some updated sections with healthier options. I think it also has some basic cooking inofrmation in it as well.
