I am so depressed
As most of you know that I am miserable at the job I have been working at for the past 6 years. I would like to quit and go somewhere else. I know I need to go back to school and get my BA in something, but im not sure exactly what I should do yet. I know that I will not last working at the current company another few months and I know I need to leave now....I am burnt, miserable and have been in a crappy mood for the past few months...and I am sure Danielle hasnt been to happy with the way I have been acting.
Do you think it would be a bad idea for me to quit my job and get a job car detailing at a car dealer for the time being....go back to school and be a little happier until I find something else? I know I may take a pay cut but I will still be making money detailing cars on the side....Thats tax free money, since I have my own business.
My mother in law also said that the school she works at may be hiring for night janitors. She said that there is oportunity to make decent money, and the benefits, and retirement are excellent. Does anyone here have a DH that is a Janitor in a school??
I don't know what to do...and I need advice.... Thanks, Scott

Re: I am so depressed
Scott I know exactly how you feel. I have wanted to quit my job so many times but I have been talked out of it each time. I know in my heart its better to stay where I am until something better comes along. If you can afford to take the pay cut and Danielle is OK with you quitting then do it.

Re: I am so depressed
How much longer do you have to get your BA?
Anyway, if you are going to do something, now is the perfect time while you are still living in an apartment and don't have to worry about a mortgage to pay or a baby to feed and clothe.
Don't kick yourself years from now wishing you would have done it!

Re: I am so depressed
Scott... im pasting something i had written on another thread b/c it was a similar situation....
At my previous job, i was MISERABLE to say the least. And i can generally make myself happy no matter where i am.. NOT at that place. it was totally taking a toll on me, and even changing who i was at home. I was making great money, could bascially go in whatever time i wanted (as long as i worked 8 hours), and could wear whatever i wanted (flip flops, sweatpants, etc ). A few months before the wedding (when money was obviously TIGHT) i was offered a position at the place i work now. The initial salary was over $8K less than where i was, dress code, set hours, all that stuff. BUT its a 7 minute commute, i work with Great people, and most importantly Im HAPPY again.
Life is too short to put off being Happy. and like LisaW said... you dont want to kick yourself years from now b/c you allowed yourself to get stuck where you are. I know its hard to take a pay cut, or not have 'Certainty", but if you will still be able to pay the bills, and Danielle agrees with your decision... then take advantage of it now, and get out while you can (before you have a mortgage/ kids, etc). Being unhappy at work is one thing, but MANY times it takes a toll on ALL other aspects of your life, and in the end, its just not worth it.

Re: I am so depressed
you might also want to look into working for a private university...many of them offer tuition remission for a ba/bs where you don't even pay taxes on it, just the fees.....good luck and both dh and i have been there!

Yeah - if you can afford the pay cut, because private universities pay LOW! You'd prob be looking at something clerical/union because you don't yet have a degree, but that's how a LOT of people get their degrees! Regarding taxes, most people do have to pay the taxes on it, unless it's directly related to the job you do in your office - and your supervisor has to sign off on that.

Re: I am so depressed
Always go with your gut, you are miserable at your current job- leave. Life is too short to waste time being miserable at what you have to do all day long- work. It should be something you enjoy with mild to sometimes high stress but not day after day. Little signs sometimes like things to make you unhappy usually means its time to change. If you can swing it NOW def do it and good luck!!

i think it depends on your contract and the university....at the ba level at least, on a masters or post grad level you will always have to pay taxes and fees - but this is how my dh got his ba and while he didn't make tons of $ he made more than i did for awhile!
(just a note, too - a lot of private universities and colleges will soon be posting openings for the fall.....)

Re: I am so depressed
Thanks so much for all the advice...I will have to see what types of jobs I can look into to replace my current job. The things that are good about my current job are the benefits and also the hours I work. I work 6 to 2pm....Thats it. I hate the work I do and I hate the job I have. I also only like a select few of the people there....
I know you are right that I should make the change now that we dont own a house yet or have any children...I am just afraid of taking the first step...I guess you can say. Scott

Re: I am so depressed
if you are that unhappy you should quit and give a lot of notice , say 3-4 weeks, in that time you should find something else. Do not let a job affect your health/mental health etc.. if its that bad, dont stay there

i know how you feel....i am a little shaky myself - i have to student teach this fall and leave my job for a questionable future finding a job once i am doen student teaching (i mean, teaching jobs mid-year, who am i kidding???) but my dh and i have agreed that its something that needs to be done, i ahve another masters that i got that relates to my job now but i have alwasy known i love kids and wanted to teach, it just was too hard to do the student teachign thing....but you have to take chances, we are in the same boat where we don't have kids yet so we thought ok, cros you fingers and give it a try! You are lucky to have Danielle and I am sure she will support you! Good luck and let us know what you deicde and how it goes!

Good luck i hope things work out for you!

Your happiness is first and foremost.. it's not the money. Yes, we need money to live- and make sure you do enough to pay your bills and get by, but being miserable is not the way to go. Think of it this way- we spend more time at work than doing most anything- so it's worth it to be happy. Whatever you do, I'm sure Danielle wants to make you happy- taking a pay cut and going to school to further yourself in the future is admirable and takes lots of courage.
Good luck

Re: I am so depressed
Yeah...I am scared to take the first step though....I know I have to find another job first...That is the first step...but quitting my job scares the hell out of me, even though I know I need to leave there...I hate starting all over, even if it will be at a place that will be better for me.
I looked in todays paper and found a few jobs I may be interested in, so I will have to apply for them...If anyone knows of any available jobs at their companies, please let me know... Thanks so much, Scott
