Some women, have incompetant cervixes. It can occur, from having a d&c, or other work done to the cervix. After effects of DES which was a med that women took to prevent miscarriage back in the day and the daughter's of these women, sometimes suffer, uterine abnormalities and other fertility issues. Some women have short cervixes, and hormones can also all cause a woman to dilate pre term.
Cervical cerclage (stitching the cervix) is fairly common and can help hold in the pregnancy.
