When you receive gifts
do you write thank yous?
I always do but I was recently told not to have thank you notes in writing since technically, we are not supposed to receive anything over $5.00

Absolutely! I think it's so important to send a thank you to a student! Why wouldn't you be able to send a written thank you?

Re: When you receive gifts
You know, I've thought about it, and I always want to write thank you's, but I don't for two reasons. The first is what you said -- we're not supposed to receive gifts over $5, so something in my writing acknowledging a gift that clearly cost more than that probably wouldn't be a good idea. The second reason, though, is that it feels odd to write a thank you FOR a thank you. Typically, this is why they give the gift -- as their own thank you. I don't know. I do feel weird about not doing it, but I haven't.

I always write thank yous. The kids love getting them too, as far as I know. I've never heard about the $5 rule though - is that in a specific place? I was always told you couldn't accept anything over $75.

Re: When you receive gifts
Can you just write, "Thank you for the gift" and not specify what it was so you can't get in trouble. I think you should always write a thank you.

I'm in NYC and good ol' Mike B declared that we are not supposed to accept gifts over $5.00.

Re: When you receive gifts
ITA with just writing a general thank you for the gift. I know the kids love getting thank you's from their teachers and I always want the parents to know it's appreciated. If you don't specify or write it vaguely then I think you'd be ok.

I write thank you cards/postcards as well. We do not have the gift rule though.

Re: When you receive gifts
I usually do. Always at the end of the year, most Christmases I do. I really do appreciate signs that my students and thier parents are appreciative themselves.

Totally agree - always have, always will.
I had a co-worker who didn't write notes because she believed why am I thanking them for them thanking me? However, she always called the house and spoke to them personally - just didn't write a formal thank you note.

I agree.... and this is why I do it.
Also, although we have the $5.00 rule too, we all know that it's not followed. And in my opinion, it should't be. if a parent wants to give you something, i say be gracious and accept it. i think it's fine to set a limit if it's a class gift, but i don't think that's necessary if an individual parent decides to do something.

Re: When you receive gifts
I always do...for xmas and teacher appreciation gifts - as well as end of the year gifts. But I was told by a veteran teacher it's not necessary to write a thank you when it's a 'thank you' gift. So recently I was given a nice gift card (they certainly don't have a $5 limit in my district! Rich people like to show off! ) for being the pianist for our drama club...and I didn't send a thank you. Felt weird, but it does make sense.

Re: When you receive gifts
I always send one. I'm special area, so I only get $5 gifts anyway, but the district has a $75 limit.
