Paul LoDuca to the Mets
Well it looks like the catcher position is filled (for now). The Mets aquired Paul LoDuca from the Marlins in exchange for minor league pitcher Gaby Hernandez and a PTBNL.
Linky
I really don't understand this move. LoDuca is 33 and has two years left on his contract. His defense is ok, but not the greatest. There are two decent free-agent catchers on the market right now to be had. Why LoDuca? Maybe the FA catchers wanted too much money?
I guess there are some positives to this trade. LoDuca is a Brooklyn native which is a plus. I also heard he is a great clubhouse guy and a natural team leader. He is also a solid contact hitter and is very difficult to strike out (great for a team loaded with players that love to K).
But in the end... I still don't understand it. Arizona expressed interest in LoDuca and there is a possibility that LoDuca may get shipped to Arizona in a deal for Vasquez.
We will see.

Re: Paul LoDuca to the Mets
I really think Willy jumps the gun on the trades...
I don't think this was such a bright move...but they DID say that Hernandez wouldn't be ready for the pros until 2008 or so, right?
After last years moves that made the team so young, there's a sudden turn towards AGE around there. (Wagner, delgado, now loduca....)

Re: Paul LoDuca to the Mets
No clue.
But if Furcal can get a whopping 13mil a year from the Dodgers... than maybe those two catchers will get at least 10mil.
Don't forget if we would have signed either of those two FA pitchers... we lose a draft pick anyways.

I'm not a fan of this either. They aren't saving a lot of money by getting him over another FA. Unless Omar has something else up his sleeve.
