Do you think this will help my plateau?
I never get past this point, no matter how much I diet and exercise. I need to try something new.
currently I have kashi cereal every morning and a sandwich with lean turkey or chicken for lunch. I find that cutting carbs and increasing proteins helps.
So instead of cereal and a sandwich every day, I was thinking of alternating breakfast with cereal and a hard boiled egg, and then alternating lunch with a sandwich and a salad or fish and veggies. On the days i have cereal, I have the salad, and the days I have the egg, I have the sandwich.
What do you think?

Re: Do you think this will help my plateau?
You should have protein with every meal. Never just have cereal. Have eggs/egg whites or cottage cheese, etc for breakfast each morning. You should also have a snack between breakfst and lunch, if there is more than 2-3 hours between the two. This snack should also have protein in it like nuts, or cheese, etc.
Then for lunch, your salad should have either eggs or grilled chicken in it for protein.
As long as you don't go over your calories for the day, this should really hlep you.
Hope this helps!

Thanks! Why is it that cereal alone is bad?

Thanks! Why is it that cereal alone is bad? I'm wondering why too. I almost always just eat cereal for breakfast.

Most cereals don't have enough protein in it. You should have at least 15- 20 grams of good quality protein for breakfast. What does your cereal have? some of the high protien ones are probably ok. Most are also high in sugar, so watch out for that.

4 g protein 5 g sugar
So it has more sugar than it has protein. the ratio is not good. If you have this, you should have egg whites, low fat cottage cheese, etc.
You should shoot for one gram of protein per pound of body weight each day. if this is hard for you to do, then have at least 100-125 grams per day.
If you have 4- 5 meals per day, that is 20+ grams per meal. The rest of your calories should come from quality low glycemic non-processed carbs and good fats.

To get good protein try almond butter on toast. It has worked for me. Almond butter has protein.

Add protein without adding fat to your breakfast.
Have the cereal with 4 egg whites, low or non-fat cottage cheese, or non-fat Greek yogurt.

Re: Do you think this will help my plateau?
I eat special K cereal protein plus - it has 10 g of protein. Combined with my milk I get 18 g of protein for my cereal.
That is actually what I do because I don't like eating eggs every day. I usually eat cereal a few times a week and egg white omlettes the others.
I agree that switching up your eating will help. Good luck!

Milk has a good amount of protein in it, therefore it is fine to have cereal and milk for breakfast. If you don't feel full enough, drink another glass of milk. Or, have a yogurt.

Yes, but be careful, milk is sugar, so too much is not a good thing.

I disagree. That's way too much protein. From what I've read, we need MUCH less than that. According to the USDA guide, women 19-30 are recommended to get 46 grams of protein (source ), but I've read that the recommendation is on the high side. This article from the Harvard School of Public Health says 7g of protein per 20lbs. That article also examines the correlation between eating too much protein and decreased bone strength.
Beth, I do agree, though, that you should switch up your diet to keep your metabolism up. Good luck!

I agree with this. Its one gram of protein per kilogram (2.2 pounds of weight) not per pound.

Add protein without adding fat to your breakfast.
Have the cereal with 4 egg whites, low or non-fat cottage cheese, or non-fat Greek yogurt.
Milk and yogurt are exactly the same food product. they have the same source and amount of protein and lactose which is milk sugar.

Re: Do you think this will help my plateau?
Thats why babies get bottle rot if they drink milk when they get their teeth in - know when they lay down with the bottle and s uck on it? All that sugar stays on their teeth!!!
Latose is milk sugar! People who are lactose intolerant have difficulty digesting that!

Yes, but the ratios are different depending on the yogurt. Skim milk has 13 sugars and 8 or 9 grams of protein and non fat Greek yogurt has 13 grams of protein and 6 sugars Per serving.
I am just trying to give her suggestions on how to add protein to her diet without adding more carbs.
