Holy crap why is it so hard to find a job?!
I'm looking to get out of my field (human service) due to burnout too many hours and not enough pay. I have a Master's tons of supervisory and clinical experience and some of the salaries people want to offer me are RIDICULOUS!
C'mon now people!

I've gone through the same thing, and wish I knew what to say. I feel super educated and experienced, but not for anything outside of human services.
I recently went on interviews before starting my new job and was highly insulted with the paycuts places expected me to take.
For the hours and pay now, I wish I could just open my own coffee shop or something of that nature. My husband is self-employed though, so I am not willing to go that route.........yet..........
I make a decent salary for what I do but still don't know how I would do it if I had kids. And I know people who make more than I do are basically slaves to their jobs.

I completely understand where you're coming from. I work in healthcare (research) with a master's and while I really am not happy with my job I'm afraid to leave b/c I won't have the same hours (work until 4) and won't make the salary I'm making which even though it's not much compared to most fields for this field it's actually pretty good. So the benefits outweigh the negatives right now. It's tough

To me this field is extremely challenging and if you have proven leadership and good supervisory qualities what difference does it make what field you are in? I have no doubt I could be successful in many other fields applying my skills and qualifications. In the Human Service field you work with HUMAN BEINGS in similar and more challenging situations then the "average" job.
It is so hard getting a foot in the door.

Keep us posted about your transition. I am always interested in hearing what former social workers expand into.
Maybe a different population would be a better match?
I used to work in mental health and it seriously made me mental. I now work with another population and it's so much better.

Any updates? I think after my DH and I are settled in our new house for a few months, I am going to seriously start re-evaluating my options. I don't know if I want to stay in this field either for more than another couple of years. Just the bureacracy (not the clients!) is seriously driving me nuts.
