English teachers: just how hard is it to get a job?

I've always wanted to be an English teacher but have been scared away by the dearth of jobs.

How long did it take you to find a job? Was it through a friend or family member? Or are you certified in English but have moved on to something else?

TIA!

I've always taught in Catholic school and it was so easy for me to find jobs--I've worked in two high schools.

I have heard English and History positions are hard to come by in public schools.

Now I think it is quite difficult. A lot of people have retired in recent years and there are a lot of young teachers. Basically many of the positions available now are leave replacements.

I got hired right out of school for a year leave replacement, again the following year for a different distrcit, and then I got my probationary at another district

I was lucky in that I never had to sub and alwasy had my own classes even though my first two years were "leaves"
