I take the Babylon line as well and I work near Union Square. Takes me about an hour and fifteen minutes from door to door.

From Port Jeff - I don't think I'd be able to commute. That's a little too long for me. When we were looking for a house I refused to move any further east because I didn't want to add time and $$ to my already expensive LIRR ticket.

The commute gets to me sometimes, but for the most part, I don't mind it.

6 minutes from the bethpage LIRR
10 minutes from the syosset LIRR

I work on 7th ave and 52nd. Takes me 1 hour to 1:15 round trip depending on the subway.

Yes, the commute does get to me, and I can't imagine commuting from Port Jeff. people do it, I wouldnt be able to.

I used to live in Long Beach and the commute was slowly killing me. I was on the west end, so it was 7-9 minute drive to the train station and then parking then the train was about 55 minutes and I work in midtown...at the end of the day it was a crapshoot parking, sometimes I would drive around and around....no thanks. PLUS after a certain time they ran once an hour!

I moved to East Rockaway last year, same LIRR line and SOOO much better. I live down the block from the Centre Ave train station and on most days my commute is a grand total of 50 minutes all together.
Commute is a HUGE thing to me being married with a child now...plus if I miss a Long beach train I can always hop on the babylon line and jump off at Lynbrook...

I read all of my newspapers on the train...and most morning is when I have the time to put on my make-up...

The commute gets to me. I live 10-15 minutes from Ronkonkoma and catch an express train to penn. I then catch the NQRW down to Union Square. Door to door it is about 2 hours. On the way home there is no express train so it adds a 1/2 more to my commute. Total for the day 4 1/2- 5 hours. I spend a fortune on books!

I live in Bay Terrace Queens

I take the express bus to 34th and Madison and then take the 6 1 stop or walk the blocks to work

in the morning - it's about 1 hour

at night- if I catch the super express bus I can be home in 45 minutes

I live in Bayside and take the LIRR-- Port washington is the best train line. Rarely any major delays since its the only line that doesn't go through Jamaica. Its a 25 min. ride into Penn station, and then I walk over to 45th and 2nd. Can't deal with the subways, and it takes just as much time walking than it does taking the subway. It's just under an hour door to door now.

Did the commute from Deer Park/Kings Park for 2.5 years. Took a toll on me big time. I don't think I could have gone any further east. While the Port Jeff line was closer to my house, the trains are few and far between, esp. at off peak times.

Now I am on the Port Washington branch which is great (except in the rain)

I am about a 25 min ride into Penn, then take the subway two stops

door to door about 50mins - no complaints

I was on the Port Jeff line - starting from Huntington - two hours door to door - manageable, but not great

Ladies, I can't thank you enough for your advice!

My company actually has a few smaller locations throughout LI, so getting a position at any of these locations would not be a problem...especially with my boss's recommendation!

I live in W. Babylon.

I take the LIRR out of the Babylon Station.

In the morning I take the 6:42 and I get into Penn at about 7:50-ish (I leave my house no later than 6:30).
In the evening, I take the 5:09 to Speonk, the first stop after Jamaica is Babylon. I get in around 6:20-ish. (I prefer this train... it's much quieter and doesn't feel as packed out as other trains). My other option is a 5:13 to Babylon.

I've been doing the commute for about a year. It's not so bad once you get into a routine. I get on the train in the morning and I fall asleep with my iPod on. The commute home is when I'll read or doze.. it's really not as bad as I had anticipated before I did it... but I say it all the time... I don't know how people do this commute for 20+ years or if they're preggers.

I've lived in Long Beach for the past 2 years, and until January, was commuting into the city for work. I worked right near Penn.

I didn't mind it because I like to read, but now that I work in Lynbrook, I realized that yes, the commute was getting to me.

I have so much more free time now! I can leave later in the morning, and get home earlier in the afternoon.

When we move to Amity Harbor, I will probably still take the LIRR the days I don't have to drive to go see clients, because my job is right next to the Lynbrook train station, which the Babylon line stops at.

I grew up in Miller Place and when my dad would have to go into his NYC office he would to go Ronkonkoma and take it from there because the Port Jeff line is like taking the slow boat to China

Move to Suffolk, then we can have playdates! I'm in Holbrook

I was looking around, saw some nice things out east.

2 hours to where we work.

4 hours both ways.

DO.

to me, 4 hours travel time...and 2 hours MORE away from my home/family, does not = better quality of life.

there is NO WAY I could cook from scratch every night like that

ETA: there are MANY insurance co's in Melville, which I imagine would be better for you commute wise. If you decide to move, you could look into relocating your job as well.





Your right on about commuting nearly 4 hours for a so called quality of life. That is way too long a time for people to travel a day to get to work. Problem with the kids, it will take you a long time to get home. If you work in the city you should live near the city or live near where you work in Long Island. I had a conversation with an older gentlemen about how he lived in the city when he was younger and how he and all his friends moved to the suburbs in the 50s, 60s, 70s to escape from the "big bad city". It turns out that his 3 kids moved to Queens to be closer to their job and not have the hassle of commuting so long. In addition, he told me that many of his friends grown up children have moved or are considering moving back to either Queens or Brooklyn to be closer to their jobs in Manhattan.

I live in South Huntington/Melville Border
I walk across the street wait inside Walt Whitman Mall for the bus. Take the bus to the Huntington train station OR if running real late drive 5mins to either Huntington train or Cold Spring Harbor train station. Hard to say time into city.

How long does it take you door to door? 1hour and 20 minutes. I am ten minutes from the train station then I take the express in the morning.

Add. question: Does the commute get to you? Not at all. I think becuase I work on 5th avenue and do not need to take a subway to get from Penn to my job. Its a five minute walk form there once I get to Penn. If i had to take the subway every day...it would get to me.
