Went to Dentist..

and the "nurse" says "we are going to do xrays"..I told her there's a very, very slight chance I may be pg. She said "Ok, BRB"..They didnt take the Xrays, just did the cleaning! She says I did the right thing by mentioning it. I told her "We're trying and I just want to be safe". She said, "No, thats good you mentioned it.".
I dont want to get my hopes up, but you never know.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Went to Dentist..

Nurse? theres no such thing as a dental nurse, do you mean the hygienist?
We are supposed to ask all patients female and all ages- yes I know Chat Icon , if there is a chance they may be pregnant b/c you are due for xrays. If you ARE pregnant then no reason unless you have a toothache BUT if you are TRYING you MOST DEF SHOULD HAVE HAD THEM NOW- they double up on the lead apron and if you look up studies there are NO dangers to the fetus when precautions are taken.
The reason why you should have done them is b/c if you do have a cavity that cannot be seen clinically and then you become PG- you should have ALL dental treatment- cavitys, root canals, done BEFORE you get PG. I just took an xray the other day on a patient that had ZERO signs of pain, clinically no signs of decay, and they had a HUGE cavity in the tooth that anyday now she would have been in some real bad pain.

instead of the person saying Im glad you mentioned it should have explained the importance of it to do now and then if you still decide not to forgo with the xrays( which are less than what you are exposed to than when you walk right out your door) then it would be your choice to take the chance during a pregnancy.
Make sure you floss and rinse with a good fluoride rinse, to help stabalize any decay if you do have it. GL!

Yes we are hygienists LOL I agree with your hygienist in waiting for the xrays. I usually will hold off on them until a patient knows for sure. However if I do a clinical exam and see something suspicious I double lead apron and take the xray as to avoid future problems. Good Luck to you Chat Icon

All hygienists PLEASE accept my apology! I am sorry, I wasnt thinking last night. It was the Dr. who actually said No Xrays after she went and asked him.
Im so nervous because I do have to have a wisdom tooth out. Should I wait and see if AF comes (god I hope not) OR is it safe to have it done earlier. (AF is due next week).
What would you do?
TY so much! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Went to Dentist..

I had x-rays done when I was in my 2WW, they just doubled up on the aprons. It turns out that I did get pregnant that month.

Yes, seriously its old school with the xray concern. There are new guidelines out for over 5 years now regarding xrays and the pregnant/nursing patient. I work for a pedodontist (Children only) now. I used to work in woodbury for a general dentist. We had a patient who was 5 months pregnant that needed a root canal and she needed xrays obviously- we doubled up on the lead apron and she and her baby were fine ( she brought baby in( newborn) when she had her cleanings) . she also had to get numb, Im not sure exactly what the dr used but all was ok'ed with her doctor as well too.

I would def have them take xrays in the event you get AF- I hope you dont get TBAF!!!!
There is no need to wait on xrays, as far as the wisdom tooth goes, again it all depends on how bad it is meaning are you able to eat? if so then leave it, if you are PG, if youre not do it now. When you are pregnant and there is toothache and where there is concern for you supplying nutrition to the baby- hence you dont eat due to the pain- you must have the tooth taken care of, if you go for a cleaning and we see a cavity but its not bothering you, then you wait till the end of your pg to do it.

GL, and I hope you are PG!!!!!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Hi Gina, I have a question for you, whats the difference in your aspect of "if" you see something clinically than if you dont- the trained eye cant always see everything? you are still doubling up with the lead apron as you said so whats the difference? why would you wait until there is a problem? Obviously if the patient knows for sure you dont take them, but prior too, why wouldnt you?

You're right the trained eye can't always see everything but "most" of the time we can see something that will potentially cause you pain(meaning it's big enough to detect to our eye). I tend to be more "old school" even though I have been practicing 6 years and assisted 10 years. I don't like to do xrays on "maybe" patients, I'd rather have a definite. Most "maybe" patients prefer me to hold off anyway. And usually call back and say they were indeed pregnant(which I hope is the case for you). You are technically safe to have the xrays(especially being double aproned) and if you feel ok with it then go ahead and take them. I suggest my pt's wait for AF and then call us. There are some crazy people out there that will think I caused harm to their child because I did xrays early on. I'm sure you can understand my side. Either way it's a personal decision. You do whats best for you.
Good Luck
