thinking about quitting my job before I find a new one

I hate my job! The work itself is hectic & enough to drive anyone nuts.

I have felt like breaking down several times in just the past 3 weeks for several reasons.. I feel as though I am a slave to my job.

Right now I work in production in the apparel industry & I honestly feel like never going back in.

Am I insane that I totally want to make a career change & be an Admin? I want a real 9-5 job. I know they exist somewhere out there.

I would quit in an instant if I could but I hate the idea of putting all of the financial burden on DH if it takes me a while to find a new job.

Are there any admins out there? How do you like it? Can you leave work at work most of the time?

I do not think a career change is insane, but the job market is VERY bad right now for certain industries and being an admin usually requires some kind of specialised experience, like business writing, bookkeeping or accounting, travel and event planning, etc. I am not saying not to do it, but I would maybe not quit my job first unless you knew for sure that you could survive without your income for several months.

I am sorry that you hate your job, but I personally would not quit unless I had another job lined up. Cant you find time to go on interviews. The job market is pretty bad right now. A career change is not a bad thing, I think about it often.

i'm in your boat - i HATE my job and would love to quit but cannot due to our bills. i think about how, if we were still renting our apartment, i could quit my job now and DH's salary could support us. all that said, if you can comfortably afford to live w/o your income AND you really hate your job then I'd quit now. it may not be the most responsible thing in the world, but unhappiness should be minimized.

Re: thinking about quitting my job before I find a new one

I would never quit a job without another lined up unless I was totally at my breaking point and being abused.

I also think that we are more attractive to employers if we interview while already employed.

I think unfortunately gaps in employment raise red flags to potential employers, even if we are not with any faults of our own.

One of my friends has also been interviewing for admin positions and having no luck because when she tells them she only wants to work "9-5" they don't like that. They seem to want someone who will be at their beck and call.

I am on the same boat right now and trying to convince myself to be miserable for a bit longer and find something else first. It's getting very rough but i know i have to do it. If it want for my car payment i could quit right now and DH can handle everything til I get a new job but i can't put the burden of my car payment on him, it's just not fair to him to do that.
