A question about leave replacements

Lets say you take a leave replacement job from October until June. Do leave replacements get paid a regular salary with benefits? Probably a stupid question..Just wondering how they are paid. Thank you!!

Re: A question about leave replacements

depends completely on the district. i've been in 3 different LI districts and all had completely different policies.

one started normal pay after 30 classroom days--before that it was sub pay with no benefits. another started normal pay on day 1. and the third depended on the wording of the contract you signed when hired.

I would try to see what that particular contract says. Maybe you can talk to another teacher in that district or possibly someone at the union office.

Ours start at $85 a day for the first 30 days, if they work more than that, they get starting salary- it is retroactive. I don't think they get any benefits. The pro of doing a leave that ends in June is if the district hires you the next year, that time counts towards tenure, that is a state rule.

Re: A question about leave replacements

it depends on the length of the leave replacement. in my district, we have many leave replacements that stay for a year or more since there are so many teachers with tenure out on leave. i know a girl who is starting her FOURTH YEAR as a leave! year long leaves are given full -pay (based on their year and step or whatever was negoitiated at contract signing, and full benefits.

my friend was a leave for 4 months and she was paid a sub-rate for each day, no beneifts.

Someone else just posted about Jarema credit.
If the leave was longer than a semester, it will reduce your probationary period toward tenure. There are loopholes, related to cert area, appointment, etc,
