Career Change - Accountant
Hi! I am currently an Executive Assistant in a sales department. I have been doing this for almost 9 years now and i need a change. I have not finished my BS degree but am planning on going back this year.
I am a Bio major but since i need elective credit, i wanted to minor in accouting.
Would i have a hard time getting an accouting job if i did not have a BS in accouting? I am also willing to get a MS.
What would be the best options for me?
Help!?!?!

Re: Career Change - Accountant
it depends on what you want to do. with a minor in accounting you may be able to do some accounts payable work, but for most upper-level accounting positions you'll need to pass the CPA exam (which requires a certain number of undergrad courses). Even if you get an MBA you'd still need those accounting courses to sit for the CPA exam.

Hi, I just became a career changer myself. If you are interested in teaching the new york city teaching fellows may be a good option. Especially since you have bio credits.

Re: Career Change - Accountant
As someone who has their MBA in accounting and is currently studying for the CPA exam and worked in public accounting...
I strongly urge you to consider taking your electives in education and going on to teach high school bio.
Seriously though, if you are planning on staying at your current company, a minor in accounting may help. If you are going to look for a new job, the accounting minor may or may not be enough (ie, public accounting firms would not hire you unless you took enough credits to sit for your CPA - which a minor would not fulfill).
Good luck!
