HR Professionals - Please Help Me, I Need Your Insight

I have reason to believe that my ex-boss botched a potential job opportunity up for me. I'm 99.9% sure of it. Now I signed a separation agreement that said that I won't speak negatively about the company and the company and its employees won't speak negatively about me but I don't think my boss is holding up her end of the bargain. I also have no way of proving this. Is there anything I can do or say to HR?

What did your ex-boss do? Hard to answer your question without more info.

There is a company, I'll call it M. M. is a small pr agency that specializes in travel. I worked with the owner and her two colleagues many times while at my last job. i was introduced to these people thru my boss and developed a terrific working relationship. after i got laid off, i noticed that M. was hiring so i sent an email to explain my new employment situation. she never responded...not even a 'nice to hear from you robyn' email. nothing. and i called her colleague ahead of time so the owner knew that my email was coming.

now you could of course say that maybe i didn't have what she was looking for but the chances of her getting resumes from so many people with exactly 5+ years of travel pr experience with luxury hotels, so much to the point that she doesn't even need to respond to me is really very unlikely. i know i sound snotty and i don't mean to, but i know when i'm qualified for a job and when i'm not. its just too coincidental that THIS person doesn't call or email. I really think my boss is behind it. to that end, i'm actually kinda paranoid that she'll botch me up wherever I land and I'm not sure how to handle that.....

That definitely sucks. No 2 ways about it.

Unfortunately there's not much you can do at this point, except follow up with the new company. If M.M. owner asked your old boss about you, he gave an honest appraisal of your work, and that led to your not getting a call back then there's really not much you can do to combat it.

Even if it is against company policy, it would be almost impossible to prove and even harder to enforce. The worst that would happen is your old boss gets a slap on the wrist, but that isn't going to un-say anything that he may have said.

As for being paranoid that he'll botch you up wherever you land, I don't know the situation but I doubt he has that kind of power. You said that he was close with M.M. people, so if he did say anything it was probably unique to this situation.

Other possibilities to consider:
They already filled the job.
They didn't think your experience was what they were looking for.
Your boss told them how much $$ you make and it's too much for them.
They are planning to call you but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Just off the top of my head.

Keep your head up. I'm sure you'll find something soon that will make you glad you didn't get the job at M.M.

Sorry for referring to former boss as "he." I meant "she"

How about having a friend pose as a potential employer to get a feel for what she might be saying???? I know people who have done this in the past, just for peace of mind.

Here's the catch - there was nothing wrong with my work. My work was great...i had company vp's complimenting me. getting let go was personal - my boss went out of her way to make it happen - b/c I was making her look bad. not intentially, of course but she wasn't getting her stuff done and I was picking up the slack and i wasn't making a point of letting people see that, but they did. my boss even complimented me TO the owner of M.M. when we all went to lunch not too long ago so I just don't get it.

If it's just one company, then fine, it s u x but whatever. but now i'm starting to get concerned that she'll call places that i'm interviewing at (someone in our office is a ref for me) and botch me. what happens then??? am i going nuts??? this woman is crazy.

Have a friend call your last company, posing as a potential employer looking for a reference. I know that the particular reference your worried about may have been colored by a personal relationship but, in terms of any new job offers, it would help to give you some peace of mind.
