Re: Hydrochlorothiazide and metformin
Did you talk to your doctor or your pharmacist about this? Maybe they can recommend a different HBP med?

maybe you can ask your pharmacist and if they agree maybe they can call your doctor and have him change the drug order?

Re: Hydrochlorothiazide and metformin
I don't think you can take Hydrochlorothiazide during pregnancy. I was on it before I found out I was pregnant and my doctor took me off of it. Since HCTZ is a water pill it may cause dehydration.
This is what I recently did and my suggestion to you is to go see a cardiologist and get all your doctors on board so you can get the best care. I've learned to be pushy but polite - you need to be your own advocate.
What I also do is keep my own records in a binder from blood test to EKG's etc. I'm real pain in the behind because I ask for a copy of everything.
You are correct about doctor's having thousands of patients and I learned this the hard way. Ask a lot of questions, it is in your best interest.
Hope this helps.

Re: Hydrochlorothiazide and metformin
HCTZ (diuretic) is recommended for initial therapy for hypertension. Discuss with your doctor ways to decrease your chance of becoming dehydrated if it's of concern - but you may have fluid retention in the kidneys which is what causes high BP. However, you cannot take other types of anithypertensives that work on the angiotensin/renin system (ARBs and ACE inhibitors), those drugs can interfere with the development of the fetus in a very bad way. So those are the drugs they woulnd't offer to a pregnant woman.
As far as metformin and a diuretic (HCTZ), I would talk to your doctor that prescribed it if you have concerns... were the 2 prescribed by 2 different doctors? I'd discuss with my OB if I were in your shoes. Other speicialists like endos and cardiologists should work with your OB to ensure your getting proper care. Ultimately though your OB is the expert on what you can and cannot take during pregnancy.
