Re: Spinoff to "happy of price going up"

When you have a baby your sense of "safety" is very different. A kid on a motorcycle was killed recently close to my house. The main road to travel around North or South is notorious for speeding cars.

I am sure I am not the only one. And walking on LI is not the most convenient.

I totally 100% agree with you. I might live about 2 miles from the closest supermarket and I would not walk there. Breathing all those fumes, walking with my 7 month old, carrying all those bags, I don't think so. Our 5 minute commute to the supermarket is not the reason for all this gas price issues and what not. I think if you do what you can, then you are doing your part. I definitely have changed many of my old ways. Ways that I grew up with. I bet ya **** cheney's taking a joy ride in his hummer as we speak Chat Icon

haha cheney's first name was starred out! Richard cheney??

I'm not really sure what you're asking/saying in this thread.

At first i thought you were saying you wish you could be more "green" but it's hard where you live, but now it seems like you are defending having to drive and use so much gas? I'm not sure.

My answer is the same though. it's all about choices.

I could make the choice to take public transportation to work and spend 6 hours on the train every day. I just can't swing that.

Of course it is confusing. We are trying to be more green but it has to be realistic too. Like you said, taking the bus is not always feasible

So we are limiting our "extra" trips.

In the mean time, I can't be happy about the price going up. I am confused how anyone could be happy about that.

I was posting how I feel about how "being happy about gas prices being up" is not how I feel.

I am sure I am not the only one. And walking on LI is not the most convenient.

I agree with you. When I drop my DD off with my mom for a visit, I worry very much about her taking DD out in the stroller and did ask her not to walk to the store with her- because I hate the way people drive on the main road by their house. Yes, the chance is small, and yes, we shouldn't live in fear, but why take the chance?

I am happy and scared at the same time. My commute is 30 miles each way. I depend on my car and with tolls my commute is already insanely expensive.

I'm happy though because I think it is waking people up to conservation. People who would be buying huge SUVs are now reconsidering. People are doing the little things like combining trips and spread across the country little things can have a large impact. It will also hopefully inspire people to press lawmakers to give more funding and set limitations so that we can have viable alternative, renewable fuels.

In the short term it really sucks. All of the prices of everything are going up. I don't know how we'll survive. but in the long term, i think it's an important wake up call.

Totally feasible and done a lot in Long Beach! Definitely has a small town feel and you can walk to anything! Most residents who live near the beach do this anyway in the summer, as not to lose their parking spots! I sure did this a lot - walked or rode my bike.

My mother did not drive until I was 5 years old - until then, she would take my brother and I in the double stroller all over Long Beach to do the grocery shopping, errands, etc.

the other thing is LI is a suburban development in terms of commuting. It was DESIGNED for people to drive to and fro.

That's my point! Does that mean now I must move out of my house?

Perhaps with the rising cost of driving, more people who are looking to move will choose locations where they can get around more without a car. It may not help you, personally, but it may end up helping us all, through lower consumption, as well as lower emissions of pollutants.

Clearly I am missing something. It sounded like a valid response to me. S/he's saying that even though you may not be able to move, more people may choose to move to cities or walkable neighborhoods and drive down consumption and energy prices which will benefit everyone.

I would understand from someone else but this person "name" was just created. She/He already repplied to my post but then is quoting something I said earlier.

This is just weird IMO!

Thank you, JenniferEver.

Not to "pick" on you, smdl, but you said

In the mean time, I can't be happy about the price going up. I am confused how anyone could be happy about that.

And I was simply pointing out how increasing prices in certain areas could, in the long run, be a positive in some people's minds.

I understand how people think it could be a good thing. But right now..... that also mean I am not going to hit the Mall. So they will sell less, lay off people. How is that going to safe the economy.

While we all have a say into over comsumption, really the taxes from gas, the gas price, the lack of affordable fuel alternative (I am personally sure someone has had the string to make sure that we don't change anything on cars so they keep making $$$), the affordability of gas alternative cars is really not helping trying to be green.

I absolutely agree with most of this. The technology exists to make more fuel efficient cars. I would like to know why we don't have plug in hybrids, for example, on the market. Car and oil companies don't seem to care about consumption, so we need to make our government care. If the US government put strict fuel efficiency standards in place, car companies would be forced to make more efficient, affordable cars.

These miracle strict standards you speak of would probably cause HUGE increases in car prices, and then people would have something new to complain about.

You cant force a company who is in business to make a profit be affordable, especially if you are asking them to follow tight efficiency guidelines.

If all of this were the case, we'd be living in a perfect world.

Where I live, I like to shop locally, I like my local food producers, and I like to support my neighbourhood. I have a Fishmonger, a small supermarket, a polish deli, a belgian deli, 2 wonderful butchers, an organic supermarket, and countless greengrocers. I travel with my Maclaren pushchair and I shove my stuff underneath, I buy smaller amounts as my fridge is much smaller.

I do drive my car, but I mostly walk around, I don't do big shops, but when I can, I buy what I am going to eat that day. In theory this is better if you aren't working, but I do live a more European kind of lifestyle. Where I live is a bit like Queens, but more British.

My neighbourhood is known for ite Bohemian lifestyle, we pride ourselves on being Green and pedestrian friendly. I drive my car to work (I work about 13 miles away) and I drive through the English Countryside everyday to get to work.

Since I am from Europe I know how easy it is to walk around.

I don't find it that easy in the US.

there are some serious political problems with going green in this country IMO... for example, why is it that all american car companies are pushing ethanol as an alternative fuel when it is not a viable future energy source? No foreign companies are... I suspect it's becuase fertilizer for corn is dependent upon petroleum products... ethanol production requires as much petroleum as it would replace... it's a non-starter from a scientific standpoint.

I think petroleum lobbyists are in bed with american companies... so deeply so that these companies will likely need a gov't bailout before seeking true alternative fuels...

Re: Spinoff to "happy of price going up"

It is all about choices. When we bought our house, we chose one in a town that was a good commute to the city and also has a nice downtown area with lots of stores that are within walking distance. Walking distance is about a mile for most places, and I find this pretty doable, not for a larger grocery shop, but I don't have trouble picking up a few things with my stroller.

If we chose another town, we could have had a bigger and probably less expensive home. But we chose a town that had a downtown because we both lived in the city a long time, and we hated the idea of driving everywhere. Our home is within our reach economically, though yes, we could have done better if we bought further out on the island or in a town with no downtown.

Do I feel 100% safe? No, but you are not that safe anywhere, but I can't live in fear and stay in my car all the time to avoid having something bad happen. And people do get carjacked or robbed in their cars or in parking lots also, so driving everywhere isn't safe either. I don't find this a good reason to not walk if walking is an option.

Ethanol is such crap. It's a giant smokescreen. It saves nothing and drives up the prices of food.
