Re: Now that airlines are charging passengers to check 1 or 2 bags...

It will limit what I pack...

DH and I had such a HORRIBLE experience flying international on American Airlines, we decided that our next trip we would either drive cross country or we will fly to Europe on an International Airline... We had an amazing experience on Virgin Atlantic for our honeymoon, but we will never fly American again!

How do you travel on something like a cruise - where you need everyday clothes, dressier evening clothes and formal wear. Carryons are easy for short trips - but we mostly only travel for 8-14 days - not for 2-4 days.

I can see the one bag - I can limit myself to that and if I feel the need I will pay to split one extra bag with DH or DD. But charging to check the 1st bag seems a bit much. I would rather they up the price of the ticket by a bit so I know in advance the charges - I have a feeling although AA and sprit do this now -others will be joining in.

Honestly, can I ask how on earth you do that? I'm going away for 2 nights this weekend and I would LOVE to just bring a carry on. But with all of the liquid restrictions there is no way I can pack a big baggie of shampoo, conditioner, make-up, and all of my stuff! Chat Icon

You are allowed 2 carry on bags. We pack light I have gone away for 2 weeks with just carry ons. Its possible.
And No I dont have kids and Im sure when I do I will have to check them. And if thats the case the 15-75 dollars its going to cost me will NOT keep me from going away.

Actually it is ONE small carry on + one personal item like a small purse - not two carry on size bags. I think it is easier to do as a young couple than when a family travels - b.c that second bag will be full of diapers, bottles, toys etc. You won't be able to bring what you need.

Also what do you do about the 3oz fluid rule when you travel with just carryons?

do they charge if you check a carseat or stroller?

We are light packers (for 4 people we usually take only 2 bags), but I say just include it in the price. The food was one thing - it sucked to begin with - I'd rather save a few bucks and buy what I like - but luggage is different. I guess we will have to invest in bigger luggage!

I would call but I don't think so - but you could gate check them to be sure

It's been years since I've checked bags for a trip less than 2 weeks. I have an irrrational need to be in control of my luggage at all times. Chat Icon

Fortunately DH and I are both really light packers. I think it comes from backpacking, where you want the lightest possible pack.

The thing is - what happens when there isn't enough room for everyones carry ons??? it's hard to find room as it is...

there's the loophole - you can plan to carry-on.. then when there is not room left overhead, they will gate check it for you. so, you can check your bag without having to wait at the baggage claim to pick it up!

It's going to force the flight crew to enforce the size requirements of carry ons. I always see people with way more then they should be able to carry on - larger rolling bags with an accessory bag & a purse or loads of large shopping bags. That may even start to happen where you check in.

I am actually currently in Wisconsin, traveling with 7 teenagers and 4 adults...we flew in on NWA and they have the $25 for the second bag .... what I did notice about many of the passengers was that the carryons got bigger and really were just small suitcases rather than an extra bag for possible things you may need right away

dont forget about the weight! if its over 40 lbs you have to pay for the extra weight too!!!! so you cant just squeeze everything into 1 without getting hit with a penalty!
pretty much sux- that is why we are driving to florida in august than flying, delta was doing these charges as of this month and with a baby I need quite a few items!

Well you do get 50 lbs - but with the weight of the larger bags these days it is easy to go over with just one bag. We are flying delta in sept - but even though we bought our ticket back in when they released their Sept dates - they are still going to charge for a second bag (the other airlines waved it if you bought your ticket before the start date) - we are only going to bring one bag pp though.

Wow you are brave to do that drive. I don't think I would have even considered driving to WDW with DD.

Re: Now that airlines are charging passengers to check 1 or 2 bags...

I just checked the jetblue website.

On and after June 1, you will be charged $15 for a second bag. If you bought your tickets before May 1st, you will be exempt from the fee.

I also noticed they increased the overweight bag fee. When I went away in april, my bag was overweight by 10lbs and they told me to lighten it up for the ride home or they would have to charge me $20 or $25- i forget(they let me go with a warning for the trip there). Now a 51-71 lb bag is $50 extra, 72-99 lbs is $100 extra.

The new fees won't stop me from traveling, but I will make more of an effort to pack light. I can see how it would have a larger impact on those families with children.

I don't check luggage anyways because once I hand the counter my bag...it magically disappears. Carry-on is the only route.

Re: Now that airlines are charging passengers to check 1 or 2 bags...

DH and I figured out that had the current rules been in effect on the airline we used for our HM when we went, it would have cost us an additional $160.

$15 for each of our first checked bags (= $30)

$25 for each of our 2nd checked bags (= $50)

= $80 times 2 (roundtrip) for a grand total of $160

I'd call that a considerable charge. We were going on our HM for shy of 2 weeks and we each had a regular size luggage and a "carryon" size luggage, but we chose to check all the bags so that we could travel easier between our connection flights.

So in essence, if these rules were in effect last October, we would have chosen to take the carryons with us in the cabin to save $100. For us, there's no way we would have traveled with just a carryon size bag for that length of time - Also, I had checked in our resort how much the laundry would cost just so it could be done for us and it was Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon - cheaper to just check a 1st bag.

Well I used Jetblue a few weeks ago and it was TWO carry ons pp. I had 2 and my handbag, DH had 2.

As far as the 3oz. rule. I buy travel size stuff in CVS. I pack light. Im realistic. I know im not going to wear or change that many times. Most of the time when we are away we are inour suits all day, get dressed for dinner. NEVER had a problem. And as far as cruises, we dont do cruises. I dont care for them. My idea of vacation is a dirty banana and a beach. I dont sight see, I do no excursions. Im on vacation to be a bum.

airlines are getting killed on fuel costs and other assorted costs its only natural for them to trickle down... same with any industry
...thats like adding a surcharge when gold goes above a certain $ value b/c your prices in past years were based on gold costing x amt.. now its y... so it costs more to sell said gold coated stuff to customers...

What I don't understand is why when I flew British Air, there were NO signs of economic problems when you would think the whole world is facing increasing oil prices (I mean OPEC decides price per barrel). My flight was cheaper than any american airline, they served soooo much food (didn't cut back like american air companies) and it was a smooth, pleasant experience. Why can't it be that way here? What is the difference?

Technically, Jet Blue allows one carry on (suitcase) and one personal item (purse, briefcase) - not two suitcases/travel bags plus a purse. I am sure this is something that will be enforced now that they are trying to recoup some expenses.

Unions; at least in my opinion. I think the baggage surcharges are to offset the rising costs of union employees. The fares have already increased due to the increase in fuel costs.

See those type of vacations are not happening for us for a while with a 11 month old baby - so I can no longer pack like that.

Wow you were lucky - they usually enforce the 1 bag rule.

This is what their website said - and they were enforcing it when we have flown with them in the past:

Each customer may bring one bag that fits in the overhead bin plus one personal
item (purse, briefcase, laptop, etc.) that fits under the seat in front of you.

Your personal item must not exceed 18"l (45.72 cm) x 15"w (38.1 cm) x 8"h 20.32 cm)
in order to fit under the seat in front of you.

To fit in the overhead bin, your item must not exceed:
for our Airbus A320: 26 inches (66 centimeters) length x 18 inches
(45.72 centimeters) width x 12 inches (30.48 centimeters) height

for our EMBRAER 190: 24 inches (60.96 centimeters) length x 16 inches
(40.64 centimeters) width x 10 inches (25.4 centimeters) height

I know it's your opinion but here are some facts....my husband, who works for an airline has, in the past several years taken a pay cut, given back a weeks vacation, reduced his holiday pay to only 5 days a year (he works all holidays and for only 5 does he get paid any extra!) and holiday pay is no longer double time, only time and a half and not to mention the fact that he was layed off for almost 2 years since 2001. So, while it's easy for some to blame the unions, it reallly has nothing to do with them. They have tried to help and his union has succeeded in helping to keep his airline out of bankruptcy.

The foreign airlines like BA are run differently than American airlines. Among other things, their goverment plays a greater role in the business and a greater share of those airlines are allowed to be owned by other foreign entities. It makes a big difference.

I think its bull, we managed to get by til now without all these extra fee's...the rise in fuel surcharge should affect the price of the ticket...these add ons are ridiculous! What's next, charging to use the bathroom on board????
