Depends on where you are going. Chat Icon

For Europe, I love Rick Steves and Lonely Planet. Rick Steves does awesome walking tours that save you a ton of money (you don't have to pay for a tour, or tour bus). Though they tend to be more for backpackers, Lonely Planet is good at telling you about "deals" and ways to save money. We'd never follow the "stay at hostels" advice, but love the happy hour deals and bar and restaurant info they offer.

Fodor's is my least favorite.. a little too old-farty for me.

I usually get Lonely Planet books when I travel, but it depends what kind of "travelling" you want to do, ie if you have money, or if you want to couch surf, things like that.

Lonely Planet.

ETA: Forgot to say why.
I like it b/c it has all ends of the spectrum. If we want to stay in hostels or eat a cheap meal they have it in that book. If we want to stay in a nice place or have a nice meal they have it. When we travel, we usually move around and in one city we do it cheap and in another we stay in a nice place.
