I need to vent...

Right now I am a substitute teacher. I just can't stand the way some teachers, secretaries, and administrators treat subs. I swear I am treated like a second class citizen. It just really bothers me. I just don't if I can take it anymore. Chat Icon Current or former subs, how do you deal with this?

Re: I need to vent...

I subbed for about 2 years and never had that kind of problem in the district I worked in.

That's such a shame that you feel this way! Chat Icon the two permanent subs in my building are like part of the family. we all love them and fight over them if people are going to be out at the same time.

Hang in there... perhaps maybe you shoudl think about putting your name on another sub list... theydon't sound very nice. Chat Icon

Re: I need to vent...

I was a perm sub for about 3 months and for the most part I liked it but definitely couldn't do it for longer than that. Aside from the pay, just the shuffling around everyday and being used to help clean out classrooms at the end of the year, etc. drove me INSANE.

Re: I need to vent...

Ive had mostly great experiences as a sub, but I think the more bummer days are just me being hard on myself.

I just hate the "going nowhere" aspect of subbing day to day (I only sub part time, maybe ten days a month at most), and the sense of not having anything to really accomplish makes me crazy.

I do several other things (tutoring, teaching italian, more grad classes, involved in a few organizations) on the side to keep me busy in my goal oriented mind.

But as far as respect, Ive had many teachers request me, a few secretaries went out of their way for me, I was asked if I would consider a leave replacement that many other subs/TAs wanted (but I was 7m preggo, of course perfect timing Chat Icon)

But I can def also relate to the teachers that think they are above us. I dont let it get to me, because I know they are not. Chat Icon

Like the teachers that look at the clock if you are thirty seconds EARLY to music, oh heaven forbid Chat Icon It's the "damned if you do, damned if you dont" youre either too early or too late, and there are 75 different clocks.

I think Ive had more cases of things being the teacher's fault (wrong info/wrong time on the plans) than my own fault...(almost never Chat Icon)

Dont let it get to you. AS long as you know youre doing the best job you can, the kids are getting their work done (and having a bit of fun Chat Icon Chat Icon) youre fine. Chat Icon

My district acts the same way towards our permanent subs.
