NYC Charter Schools
What are they like? Are they better than regular public schools? I know that most of the charter schools are located in not the best of neighborhoods.... Do teachers get the same pay and benefits as nyc public school teachers?

Re: NYC Charter Schools
Most are located in high poverty areas yes. But they are more structured than the regular public schools in those areas. (there was a charter school inside the public school i worked in this past year) It was mentioned in passing that the reason the kids were well behaved was because you can expel a kid from a charter school, which u really can't in a public school.
the pay, benefits and hours all all different for each charter school. some run according to the doe contract, but most do not. also few are affilated with the UFT, but im not sure how that works. some pay more than the doe.
typically a charter school has long teaching hours, usually 730-5, the school year calendar is different, usually longer, vacations/days off can differ.
A teacher friend of mine sends her son to a charter school and said that there are 2 general ed teachers in his class plus a para for only 20 kids.
