Re: When do I have to start sleeping on my back?
You want to try to NOT sleep on your back...sleeping on your side is best.

Re: When do I have to start sleeping on my back?
Good question, A. I never realized we "had" to sleep on our back early on - I just thought we did because sleeping on our stomach would begin to get uncomfortable.
I'm almost 10 weeks and I still sleep on my stomach.

Re: When do I have to start sleeping on my back?
They say not to sleep on your back when you get bigger because it cuts circulation off to your legs. They say not to sleep on your belly when it starts to get uncomfortbale. I am 30 weeks and I am able to sleep on both my back and my belly with no problems. I think it depends on the way you carry and how comfortable you are. They recommend that you sleep on your side as much as possible.

How come they say not to sleep on your back?
That is the only way I am comfortable.... Not that I am so big yet.

Re: When do I have to start sleeping on my back?
Honestly, I am sleeping anyway I can.
When you don't sleep much, if you are comfy enough to fall asleep, that's good enough for me.
Who knows how I will feel when I am further along though. I probably won't sleep at all.

Re: When do I have to stop sleeping on my back?
I slept on my back until about 30 weeks. My Dr said as long as I was comfy and my BP was okay there was no need to worry

I'm still sleeping on my back at 15 weeks. I've been told that I'll know when to stop.

Re: When do I have to stop sleeping on my back?
i sleep on my back when i feel like it - its actually more comfortable to me now that i am getting big and i have NEVER been a back sleeper. i don't seem to have trouble with circulation or breathing so i don't worry about it.

Thank you. My OB never told me not to but I read that you shouldn't.
I have been waking up in the middle of the night on my back in a panic!! I have been sleeping horrible thinking I am crushing the baby

Re: When do I have to stop sleeping on my back?
They say to stop sleeping on your back during the second half of pregnancy. It puts the full weight of your uterus on your spine, back muscles, intestines, and the inferior vena cava (the vein that transports blood from your lower body to the heart).
It can also put you at risk for backaches and hemorrhoids, inefficient digestion, and impaired breathing and circulation. Lying on your back in the second and third trimester can also cause changes in blood pressure.
I feel short of breath if I lay flat on my back, It's very uncomfortable to me.
They say you should sleep on your left side. It improves the flow of blood and nutrients to the placenta.

I have been waking up in the middle of the night on my back in a panic!! I have been sleeping horrible thinking I am crushing the baby Don't worry you are totally fine! I had read that it was around 16+ weeks you should stop, so I asked my OB. And I gained 50 lbs and had a 10lb baby, so if there was any crushing going on I would have had it
I never had any of the complications the PP mentioned, (unless you count hte impaired breathing but I contribute that to my son's big feet taking up residence in my rib cage) I hated pregnancy but I had a very easy one overall. My OB said at some point sleeping on my back will no longer be comfortable and to just listen to my body. She was right by 31 weeks I could only sleep on my sides and that didnt mean I was getting much sleep.

Re: When do I have to stop sleeping on my back?
I asked my doctor because I was concerned as well. She said that you should do your best to stop sleeping on your back by 14 weeks, but not to worry because your body will naturally move when it needs to. So I sleep starting on my side and then when I wake up on my back I'll switch again.
