When is the most hiring done over the summer in NYC?

Okay so as this is the second year that I am looking for a job this year in NYC (found one last year the day teachers had to report back to school...and for those u know my situation well that worked out wellChat Icon)

Now I went on several interviews last year ranging from june til august. most i believe i came across in august, closer to when school was starting.

It seems that teachers that get hired in June were either student teachers or Subs, and as June is almost over, I dont see anything happening as i was neither this year.

So that leaves July and August, I know that August is the best month given that most teachers leave last minute or some teachers dont tell their principals they are leaving til August for whatever reason.

I've heard things about how different times in the summer that principals go on vacation etc etc.

I ask this because I'm frustrated. I really don't want to spend my whole summer hanging off the deep end worrying if I can get a job for september. I also had planned a trip to puerto rico that was supposed to be the 1st 3 weeks of August, but i'm going to have to cut that down to 2 either 1 or 2 weeks if i dont get a job by then.

Any advice, suggestions or knowledge anyone might have thats helpful please share. I know there are also some of you out there who may be in the same boat as me.

And btw I've sent out at least 150+ resumes to schools in Queens and Manhattan. I am looking for Gen ed Elementary Ed position.

Chat Icon I just wanted to send you my support. I am in the same boat. I cannot express just how stressed and worried I am. I just graduated in Mayand I was laid off the same month so now I am officially unemployed. I haven't heard a word from the tons of resumes and OLAS applications I have sent out. Everyone tells me " just hold on until Aug" blah blah blah, but I am really worried. I need to work and I want to start my career already! Chat Icon
Why is it that I just graduated from college yet I am applying for jobs that I wouldn't have worked when I was 16 (Target, Khols etc.)
I am just keeping my fingers crossed that it will all work out for usChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I feel your pain completely, I had a teaching job but was let go, I REFUSE to work at a miniuim wage paying job, not related to teaching for the interm...many ppl have suggested this to me but i know it'll only further depress me, and thankfully i saved a bunch of money to tie me over til september.

If i dont get a teaching job im not sure what i will do Chat Icon

i hope it works out for both of usChat Icon

I was hired in August. I know people in my building, however, who were hired the 1st week of September and another who was hired in October.

I was hired in Sept, but this was when school started later. I was hired a few days before school. I teach hs and I hand delivered resumes the last week of August. I'm not sure if it's recommended for elementary, but it couldn't hurt to hand deliver to the ones you are really interested in. I remember wondering the entire summer if I would be employed. It's not a pleasant feeling, but unfortunately in NYC everything really happens last minute. Good luck!

I just wanted to say that I completely understand what you are both going through. I have also sent out over a 100 resumes and I also don't want to take a minimum wage job. I have been there, done that...I want to move forward not backward...and it would also depress me as well...And I think I can only take one more year of subbing. Subbing is babysitting not teaching.

But I wish the best of luck to you both!
