Can anyone tell me about Valley Stream?

Hey everyone! As I mentioned in my 1st post, DH and I are looking for a house. The area we are looking in is Valley Stream. I know that School District 13 is the best district in Valley Stream, but I don't know much about the high schools.
Can anyone share information with me about the high schools? I'm especially interested in information that is not reflected in School Report Cards, like culture, reputation, etcetera.

Thanks so much in advance!

I know Willow Road school is great. It's Valley Stream SD 13, but in Franklin Square.

This website is great for reviews & ratingings on schools

Good luck and welcome to the boards!

If you move into the Gibson area of Valley Stream, school district is 14 which is Hewlet.. They have great schools and you pay VS taxes and get to send your kids to Hewlett schools.. And the houses are afforable..

I live in the Dogwood Estates section of Franklin Square and my son goes to the Willow Road school. It is an EXCELLENT school and a beautiful neighborhood. Good luck with your search! Chat Icon

We live in Gibson and absolutely LOVE it! Our neighborhood is fantastic, the houses are well-kept and nicely maintained and the school district is Hewlett-Woodmere. We would not have bought in VS if it was in the actual VS school district. You can do a search on mls for Valley Stream with Hewlett-Woodmere schools to see what's available. Our next-door neighbor's house is actually for sale.... Chat Icon

We are in V.S and love it. We are in the VS school district and have had no problems. Our daughter's teachers are AMAZING and I can see that the teachers care.

Re: Can anyone tell me about Valley Stream?

Thanks everyone. I have been using Great Schools for my research. However, if I were to go strictly by what is written on GS, then I would say that after sd13, sd30 is the nxt best with 24 coming in last. However, it seems that "locals" prefer 24 to 30. I'm not sure why this is but if 24 is indeed the better district, this is not reflected on GS.

That being said does anyone know anything about the junir high schools and high schools that I wouldnt find out from reading GS?

If so, you can FM me or post it here. Thanks!

Re: Can anyone tell me about Valley Stream?

I live a block away from Central HS (SD13) and while I never attented the school I kind of get a "vibe" that it's not as great as it used to be. I only say that because when my family first moved here in 95 there used to always be tons of xtra curricular activties going on there and over the years I've noticed there has been a slow decline in that. Other than that I can't really comment on much else regarding schools.

Re: Can anyone tell me about Valley Stream?

Hello! I grew up in VS, not too far from Central and Memorial. Although I went to Catholic school, I had several friends who went to public. Sd 30 is a definite NO! SD 24 is okay, but I don't know too much about South MS/HS, but the elementary is fine. The population is definitely changing in VS. If you are going for 13, make sure it is North, which is MS & HS (actually located in Franklin Square), and not Central. You may also want to check out Malverne, with SD13.

If you don't mind me asking, why are you set on VS?

I grew up in Valley Stream and attended from elementary to graduated Central High School which is district #13. I can tell you that I heard it changed A LOT, I have friends that still live in the neighborhood and have younger cousins and family that attend the school.

I can say that I loved growing up in that area and loved all my teachers, etc..but like I said, I heard it changed.

I work in Brooklyn and so I'm trying to cut back on the commmute time. My inlaws live in the Bronx and we visit them practically every week. So Valley Stream seems to place us in a position to be close to my job, my in-laws, and my LI family.

The house we put an offer on is actually not far from Central, which I didn't think about until after we put the offer on it. I'm embarassed to say that I researched the elementary school districts but forgot about the junior high schools and high schools.

Well, you still have a long time before you need to worry about MS/HS. Wheeler Avenue school is very good. Was your offer accepted?

They did accept our offer but there are some issues being worked out.

Unfotunatelyy for me, my son will be going to 6th grade next year, so I will need to worry about this too soon! On the other hand, my DD is 14 months old so....I think I need to step back and think alot. I'm scared about what would happen if I aksed my husband to rescind his offer.

I am sorry you are second guessing this now and don't kick yourself in the you know what, sometimes we get so wrapped up in the process that we forget to ask and think about everything.

Is there a way you can do some more research on the other schools before you make a decision to step back? Like I said before, my friends and I are a product of that school system we all loved growing up there, but I have "heard" it changed, but that does not mean it might not be a good fit for you or your child.

I don't know what to tell you...I know I would not send my kids to Memorial/Central.

ITA and I did as well. I feel like we moved out of there at a good time. I would not send my child to Memorial or Central HS. Just my opinion. Good Luck with your decision.

Re: Can anyone tell me about Valley Stream?

coming into this late, but would you go five minutes more east to Lynbrook. They have a few of the best schools on the Island. We neighbor them in East Rockaway and are looking to jump there in ten years when Bella hits HS because ER is really small.

Re: Can anyone tell me about Valley Stream?

I grew up in Lynbrook with district 24, Valley Stream schools.

Back then the schools were excellent. I dont know how the high school is now, but Carbonaro and W.L. Buck elementry schools are still really good. I have family that teaches in those schools.

The area I grew up in which was called the yorkshires of lynbrook which is behind 6th ave electronics store which is on sunrise hwy in lynbrook, and also the sunrise senior center.

It was a really nice, family based neighborhood. I loved growing up there.

Alot of times people associate having more lavish surroundings with having a better SD but I have learned that its the kids and their test scores thats more important--its facts not opinions. With that said do your research, look at crimes statistics etc--types of crimes too, look at your neighbors, check out registered sex offenders etc. When we looked at some of the so called "better" communities on LI we were a bit taken back on the amount of sex offenders that lived in what "appeared" to be perfect neighborhoods.
