allergic to breastmilk?

DS is 8 weeks and we just got back from the Dr. He had a little blood in his stool and the Dr. said he could allergic to lactose in my BM. He may have to start some kind of formula that starts with an A. I can't believe it...Chat Icon Iwanted to give DS BM until 6 months at least. Has anyone ever gone through this?

Re: allergic to breastmilk?

What if u just watch ur diet and avoid anything with dairy?
I've heard of moms BF babies allergic to dairy. U just have to be careful of what u eat.

My DD is allergic to milk. She also had blood in her stool, but, I wasn't BFing. She is on Neocate. Ur dr. probably want ur DC to be on Alimentum by Similac.

I would talk to ur ped. about still continuing to BF if this is what is really important to u. GL!!

Re: allergic to breastmilk?

Do you consume any dairy products? Also- is it possible that your little one is alergic to soy?

I am really surprised that a doctor would immediately recommend switching to formula rather than trying to figure out what is causing the allergy and seeing if excluding it from your diet should help.

Yeah I guess I'm in a bit of a panic because I didn't ask enough questions. Now that I'm home and talking to my mother, I've got a long list of questions to ask. I wish the dr. was more willing to get to the bottom of this. All she did was send out a stool sample to test for blood. We already know there's bloodChat Icon We go back to the ped. on Thursday.

Re: allergic to breastmilk?

Same exact thing happened to my DS and they put him on Allimentum - Dr. said we will introduce milk later to see if it is truly a mike protein allergy, but didn't want to label him as that yet bc he was so young when he had this reaction.

ETA: if is is Allimentum that your DC will be on, check with your insurance bc many companies cover the formula.

Also, I was told that the allergy test to find out definitively if it was a milk protein allergy is pretty invasive so they didn't want to do it (nor did we) so we will "challenge" him at a year old and give him milk to see if he is allergic or not.

Re: allergic to breastmilk?

DD had an that. It was an allergic reaction to milk protein. I just eliminated all dairy, the obvious like milk, cheese, yogurt, and the not so obvious - read labels it will make your head spin. She was fine after two days. After a month I slowly added dairy back in. Now at 7 months, DD is still drinking BM (no formula) and I eat all the dairy I want.

Same for us. Watch your dairy intake. DD was allergic to the milk I was drinking and is STILL affected by it at 1 yr....so I drink Lactaid milk in my coffee and cereal and she's fine. They will grow out of it. DD eats all the cheese and sairt she wants now....but in the beginning I had to watch everything dairy.

If you want to continue BFing, you can Chat Icon Just watch what you're eating.

Re: allergic to breastmilk?

I agree with all of the above posts. Watch your dairy but watch your soy intake too. It could be a lot of things. Have you spoken to a lactation consultant? They are so pro BFing that they seem to go above and beyond to help get to the bottom of these things. More so than some pediatricians. Good luck! Don't give up yet!

Re: allergic to breastmilk?

My DD has a milk and egg allergy. I had her tested at 6 months with blood work and the skin prick test. It wasn't bad at all.
I also EBF for 11 months and out of those 11, the last 5 I eliminated dairy and egg from my diet. It was hard in the beginning but it got easier. I only had to eliminate the obvious.
If hers is that severe then you might need to start reading labels. It really isn't that bad because most of them are easy to read and clearly state milk.

Now, I am not sure what brand of Soy you drink but Stoneyfield does contain milk in it. I was using that also and thought DD was allergic to soy as well. Then a friend of mine informed me of this (thanks Lo13Lo13 Chat Icon ) and I switched to Silk and no problems.

I am also surprised that your ped. pushed formula on you so quickly.

Whatever you decide, it will all work out Chat Icon
