Would you go on vacation if you knew you really could NOT afford it...
I know someone who is taking a vacation that cant afford it at all....
What would you do?

Re: Vacation
I wouldn't do it, because I stress out too much about $$. BUT, my DH would book it in a second if it was left up to him. He acts 1st, thinks later. "Things will work out" is what he always tells me.
Some people are like that. Sometimes, I wish I was one of those people.

Re: Vacation
i definitely wouldn't. some people feel vacation is necessary even if you don't have the money, but i think it's an extra that needs to be cut if you can't afford it.

Re: Vacation
no, i wouldn't.
DH and i planned a vacation for this past april when we knew we could afford it... and when we knew that "life" would get in the way of us being able to afford another vacation for some time.
but to me paying the rent and the bills is much more important than a vacation. that's what the beach is for! it's local and very cheap

Re: Vacation
why would you buy anything that you couldn't afford? If I had a super hard year and reallllly needed to get away, I might TELL everyone I was going on vacation but instead just chill @ home with no distractions or annoyances. Just seems super irresponsible to spend non-existant money on a luxury

Re: Vacation
Nope, we would LOVE to go on vacation, but right now, we can't afford it. When we get a chance to go, and have extra money, we will go.

It all depends. If they can't pay their mortgage and are borrowing money from family/friends, then no they should not be going on vacation.

No, I could never relax thinking "I can't afford to be here" the whole time. It would actually pisss me off to have to think about anything on vacation.

Re: Vacation
no I wouldn't in a normal situation BUT I did do this in 2006 my mom received a double lung transplant december 1, 2005 and I sat at the hospital day and night (besides DH, no one else spent any time there and I have a brother and sister ) She died 3 times, and at one point she would not wake from her coma, to the point they thought she was brain dead from the lack of oxygen to the brain when they lost her 3 times. those 2 weeks of thinking she was brain dead, took such a toll on me I cannot even begin to tell you. I knew she was in there, I just knew it. So i brought a radio into the room and began playing her new CD's that she just got prior to surgery. in her coma, I kid you not she was tapping her feet to the music. the nurses were amazed, needless to say she woke 3 days after that.
she came home in middle of Jan and I stayed with her for 2 weeks, changing bandages, adminsitering 65 pills over the course of 24 hrs everyday, it was by far the hardest thing that I have ever been through. I was showering her daily and feeding her. I did this all alone.
Oh did I mention I was also planning and paying for my Oct wedding??
I thought i was going to lose my mind.
Feb came and I begged DH to take me away just for a few days, or commit me to a rubber room or I swore I wasn't going to live to get maried.
End result, we took a short trip that we could not afford. (as in we didn't have extra $$ laying around, we borrowed from our wedding $$ and I worked extra days to put it back)
So I have to say, I did but as you can see I needed. And even though alot of you say no, I wouldn't judge others IF you don't know what's going on.

Re: Vacation
if it was mentally needed to save my sanity or marriage then yes I would charge it and pay it later. Also it depends, - if my house was going in to forclosure and creditors were calling me then no- but if money was just a little tight but there is still money to pay the bills and such then I would.

I agree with this.
Also, where is the OTHER??? I say it also depends on your definition of 'can't afford it'. A lot of people define it by whether it was paid 'cash' or 'credit'. I don’t think of it that way. I think a lot of people say they can afford things, but have zero dollars in savings, no retirement and no assets. So, yeah, you paid cash for it, but could you REALLY afford it? KWIM?? I NEVER think we can afford anything ‘frivolous’ because there are SMARTER things we could be doing with the money.

Re: Vacation
Well, technically right now we can't afford anything because we are saving for a house so every dollar is being stolen away from our house fund. But we will go on vacation every single year anyway!
But, if we were having trouble with day to day expenses - absolutely not! I wouldn't even be able to enjoy it if we did.

Re: Vacation
Like other posters said, if we were seriously in debt, and had creditors calling then i would not charge it just to go.
But also, if i didnt have the money to pay the vacation outright, then i dont think i would go either. I wouldn't want a few grand sitting on a charge card accumulating intrerest for a one week vacation, and what if god forbid i couldnt pay it off.

Re: Vacation
Well considering my vacations consist of going home to visit the family, yes I would. If we were in debt, my husband wouldn't come with me and that would save us money.

Re: Vacation
Definitely not.
In fact I booked an extra cheap vacation last month because I felt I would enjoy myself MORE knowing I got a great deal on it.
Yes we could have afforded a 3000 vacation, but I was happier booking a 1600 vacation.

Re: Vacation
Would I intentionally take a vacation that was really outside of our budget? I doubt it. I can be pretty frugal. But I do have friends who vacation several times a year and have less income and less savings than we do. But they make vacationing a priority for their family. Who would I be to judge that?

No , we wouldn't go away if we couldn't afford it
I have a friend who would go to Disney two times a year and could afford their morgage payment.
She had to sell her big house to pay off her debit. now has purchased a smaller house and two brand new cars and has booked another Trip to Disney. she will never learn

Ditto ! DH & I go on vacation every year. We choose cheaper vacation destinations when we don't have alot of money but we really love to travel so we make vacationing a priority by giving up other things.
