Question about Student Teaching

What exactly did you do? Did you sit in the back of the classroom and take notes? Do you feel like you gained alot from student teaching?

I sat for the first 2 days then I actually taught all of the classes.

It can be a great experience if you have a good cooperating teacher. One of mine let me do whatever I wanted and it was a good learning experience. It is so hard, but one of the most valauble ways to really "get" what it is like to be up there teaching.

You are supposed to first observe and then ease into the teacher responsibilities. You and your cooperating teacher will determine the timeline, but the goal is for you to take over all of the responsibilities of a full-time teacher (planning, teaching, grading, etc) during your experience, with the guidance of the cooperating teacher.

When I was in school, I had two student teaching assignments - 1st experience was in a magnet school 1st grade, 2nd experience was in an overcrowded lower ses school, 3rd grade. 2 different teachers/classes/experiences. I learned a lot from each. We were expected to observe for the first few days then get in and help then slowly begin lessons and eventually work our way up to the whole day. Lots of work, but well worth it. I learned different techniques from each teacher and school. Things were done very differently in each setting. We also had the opportunity to see the end of the year w/one grade and the beginning of the year with the other.

I observed for two days and then took over different parts of the day. My second placement I took over almost immediately. I had an AMAZING cooperating teacher in my second placement (not to say that my first placement teacher wasn't good, she was). She supported me and let me go with my ideas, and I really benefited from being in her classroom.

I did my student teaching over the summer. The first day, I observed, the second day I taught a lesson, and by the end of the week, I was teaching the whole day (4 hours). Once you do a few lessons, it is like second nature. The cooperating teacher is always there for guidance too.(if you get a good one. ) Good Luck!

The responsibility of a student teacher is to take on the tasks of a teacher, which includes teaching, assessment, discipline, etc. You work with your cooperating teacher to plan the lessons, and then you should be let out there to do them. Good luck!
