catholic school interview? Update, got the job!

I have an interview at a catholic elementary school this week. Does anyone know what kind of questions I should expect? Will it be a lot of the same questions asked on public school interviews? TIA!Chat Icon

Re: catholic school interview?

i don't work at a Catholic school, but did interview at several about 6 years ago.

they will ask all the questions that you would get at a public school like how do you teach reading? how do differentiate instruction, how do you handle parents, etcc.... blah, blah blah

BUT they will also ask:
why do you want to teach at a Catholic school?
How will you teach religion? What do you know about the faith?

They also have grounds to ask whether or not you're a practicing Catholic and what you know about the religion because you are responsible for teaching it to your class, attending Mass with your students, and depending on the grade level, preparing them for one of the Sacraments, etc.

I was asked:

1. "Why do you want to work in a catholic school?"

2. "If you were to be offered a job at a public school after you accept this job would you renege on your offer here?"

Also they talked a lot about the time commitment outside of school. For example at the school I interviewed at, during December they basically babysit kids on Saturdays so their parents can go shopping without them.

OMG, I was hoping there would be less of a time commitment outside of school. I have been a leave replacement for over four years in a public school and I'm so tired of jumping through hoops. It didn't get me anywhere either. I'm hoping a catholic school will offer more job stability. It's so hard not knowing where you are going to be working each year.

If the school is in the Brooklyn Diocese then I don't know about job stability. Not sure how it is in the RVC diocese.

Also it depends on the school. My outside responsibilities include working at an auction (friday or sat night once a year) and showing up on a sunday during catholic school week for registration (which i never did).

I've been working in catholic school for five years and my job was never safe.

ETA: I hope I don't seem harsh. Congrats on getting an interview and I hope you do get the job!! There are many good things about working in a catholic school. Don't worry about the interview, I'm sure you'll do fine. It is a lot like a public school interview with the exception of them asking why you want to teach in Catholic school.
best of luck to you!!Chat Icon

Re: catholic school interview?

In my opinion the catholic school interview was basically the same as the public school interview. I think they may have asked me how I would incorporate faith into my lessons. Other than that, it was the same. I currently teach at a catholic school, so if you have any questions FM me! Good luck! Chat Icon

Re: catholic school interview?

I had an interview with the diocese and it was essentially the same.

The one difference was they told me I would be teaching 1 section of religion and asked what 3 things my students would say they had learned after a year in my religion class. Good luck!

Re: catholic school interview? Update, Got the Job!

Thank you all for your help! I will be teaching 1st grade and the school is 15 minutes away from my house. I've worked in 3 different public schools in the last 4 and a half years(leave replacements) and I've had enough. It seems like a very nice place to work, I'm so excited!Chat Icon Going out to celebrate. Chat Icon

I was asked this when I got my NYC job (if I would go to LI) and it's ironic, the prinicpal, who asked me, went to a LI school the next year!

I applied to all of the Catholic Schools within 15 miles of my house at the beginning of July and I got the call from the principal of one of the schools 3 weeks later.

I applied directly to the diocese months ago and I just got a response from them telling me they are not sending out applications at this time. I would recommend sending your resume directly to the schools. Good Luck! Chat Icon
