Am I just paranoid? Re: PAP test
I'm confused - I have a new gyno, and saw her for the first time six months ago for a checkup and a Pap. I went back yesterday for my six-month checkup (I'm on the pill) and she gave me another Pap test.
I know it's recommended that women get them once a year. My last doctor once didn't give me a Pap at a checkup when I was due, since it was only 360 days after my last one, not a full year, and he said insurance wouldn't cover it. So... if it's not covered at 360 days, why did my gyno give me another PAP six months after my last one? I asked her, and she just brushed off the question and said, "oh, here we do it every six months." Has anyone ever heard of that? Anyone here get them every six months? Does insurance really cover that?
I'm getting paranoid that my last Pap was abnormal and she's just not telling me.

Re: Am I just paranoid? Re: PAP test
maybe she forgot she gave you one 6 months ago, and was just covering herself by saying they do it every 6 months??

Re: Am I just paranoid? Re: PAP test
she should not have done it again and insurance will not cover it, they are very strict about it being over a year later, not one day earlier unless you have a medical reason if you get a bill i would bring it to the office and complain to them because she should know that,

Thanks so much for the responses.
I guess I'll just trust my doctor and not worry about it unless I hear otherwise in 2 weeks.

Ditto.
ETA -- your doctor would have NO reason to hide an abnormal pap from you either. If your last one was abormal, she would have told you.

Thanks so much for all the responses! I had never heard of having them every six months, and I was worried that insurance wouldn't cover it and / or that something was wrong. I feel better now!

Re: Am I just paranoid? Re: PAP test
My insurance used to cover PAPs every six months but then it changed even though I was on BCP. My doctor still continued to do it because she believed that it should be done. She just made up a medical excuse to the ins. co. justifying the PAP so they would pay. She didn't feel that they should dictate what she did for her patients.

Same here
Also, since day 1 that I went on the Pill which was a LONG time ago, I have had a PAP every 6-months.
Your Insurance should cover it, don't worry

Re: Am I just paranoid? Re: PAP test
I go every six months and get a PAP done also. But then again I have to go every six months because my grandmother has ovarian cancer and it is really recommended that I go every six months so it seems normal to me to get one done both times.

Is ovarian cancer hereditary? I thought it was only gotten as a result of HPV transmitted as an STD?
Why are women on BCP tested more often than those not on BCP? I've only ever been tested one a year.

The Pap smear tests only for cervical cancer. One of the causes of cervical cancer is HPV, but not all cervical cancers are caused by HPV and most people with HPV will not develop cervical cancer. It has nothing to do with ovarian cancer. My mother has ovarian cancer, and has had it for over 3 years, so I know a bit about it.
Genetics play a small role - my mother has it, which means I have twice as much chance of getting it as the average woman. It brings my chances from 2% to 4%. The GYN-oncologist told me that the only thing I can do to lower those odds is to stay on BC Pills as long as possible.
The only testing they can do for ovarian cancer is the CA-125 bloodtest, which gives out a lot of false positives, so my previous gyno did it once a year for me but my current one (and my mother's GYN-oncologist) don't recommend that I bother. My previous gyno also had me have a pelvic ultrasound once a year, but my current one does not because my chances of developing the cancer, though doubled, are still only 4%.
This is the 4th gyno I've been to (have been going for 12 years - moved around a lot!) and have always been on the Pill, but NEVER Pap tested twice a year. And as I said in the OP, one doctor actually denied me a Pap that I was due, because it was 360 days after my last one. I never heard that the Pill puts you at higher risk for cervical cancer, so I don't see what that has to do with it.

I should have made myself more clear. Yes I go every 6 months to be on the safe side because my grandma does have ovarian cancer and that puts me at a greater risk. I think they just do a pap smear every time I go not because of ovarian cancer because they check when they check your ovaries at the end of the exam to see if they feel anything or if something has changed. Does that make sense?
