I don't know much about them but my initial reaction is that they aren't worth the risk.

Re: What are your thoughts on VBAC's...
Im sure plenty of docs and midwives do them safely and successfully. With any procedure there are risks, but frankly, I wouldn't do it for myself. I wouldn't want to have something else to worry about it. I'd rather know what to expect than the fear of the unknown. Though I am sure others would strongly disagree. You have to do what is right for you.

Re: What are your thoughts on VBAC's...
Having had a c-section which went so well, my initial reaction is not worth the risk.
However I will say if I want 3+ years to have #2 then I will explore the option. At that point I will feel that my body is healed well enough to lower the risk of a rupture....but this is JMO.
if it something you are interested in totally research it, talk to your DR and talk to chmlengr, she had one!

IMO, not worth the risk. My 1st c-section went well, I don't really see a reason to want to have a vaginal birth now.

Re: What are your thoughts on VBAC's...
I really think it depends on how long you wait between pregnancies. I will behaving my 2nd baby only one year after my 1st baby so my doctor would not do a VBAC. I agree with my doctor and I feel that my pregnancies are too close to do a VBAC. I would love to have a VBAC but I know there are too many risks. I would definitely talk to your doctor and/or midwife and do some research and see what works best for you.

Re: What are your thoughts on VBAC's...
I've looked into this a lot. Basically, once you have a C-section you have a .2% chance of uterine repture regardless of how you deliver. A VBAC has a .5% chance of rupture -- that risk is decreased if your doctor doesn't use drugs to bring on/increase your contractions. Essentially, VBACs are very safe, especially in hospitals that have a 24/7 OR and can operate immediately.
There are a lot of misconceptions about VBACs and the risks tend to be greatly exagerated, while the risks of repeat C-sections are down-played. Most doctors don't want to do VBACs because it requires them to be in the hospital for most of labor in case you need an emergency C-section and they can't use pitocin -- which they all seem to love so much. If you are interested in VBACs do some research on your own to get a more accurate understanding of the risks/benefits to see if it's right for you.

Re: What are your thoughts on VBAC's...
I was interested, but Doctor would not do it.
I switched Doctors (for other reasons) and my new practice wouldn't do it either.
There are a few criteria that you need to meet. From what I remember, some are:
-you can't go past the due date -baby can't be too large
My friend worked for medical malpractice attornies, and from the cases that she saw, she said that she would never have a vbac. With that said, there thousands of successful ones each year.
So, I gues it is a personal decision that requires really educating yourself, and finding a Doctor who will be on board.
Good Luck!

Re: What are your thoughts on VBAC's...
Im only asking because I just switched to a new doc. and I was just there last monday for an annual exam. I didnt know i was preggo yet. The doc and i just got to talking and he told me that he does VBACs. I hated having a C Section because I was in pain but I wouldnt want to risk somehting happening to the baby.
But then again, when I had my first C Section I bleed a lot and they almost had to give me a transfusion. Plus, I had a fever for almost 2 days.

ITA. The risks are so low I'd personally have no problem having one. If I had ever had a c-section I'd definitely go for the VBAC.

I could not have said that better myself
I did however have a great section and recovery and am hoping for the same with this one. The dr said that the recovery should be even easier than last time since I will not be laboring before hand. Usually if you have an unplanned section you are healing from both the labor and the section at the same time.

I think this is a really interesting point because most problems with VBACs occur when doctors mismanage or overmanage labor -- usually by giving pitocin or cytotec (which is not even approved by the FDA for pregnant women). Your friend is seeing catastrophic outcomes which implicate the doctors, hence the malpractice suit.
It really is important to draw a distinction between medical malpratice and VBACs.
VBACs have gotten a bad name because of doctors use of these labor augmenting drugs. In the 1990s VBACs were very popular and successful. Doctors began using cytotec off-label (meaning it was not approved by the FDA for use in labor -- in fact, the package insert states that it should not be used by laboring women) to try to produce quicker labors. The contractions caused by this drug led to uterine repture and major law-suits against these irresponsible doctors.
This has caused much of the hysteria we see around VBACs today.

Re: What are your thoughts on VBAC's...
My gut tells me that the risk is overblown and that doctors would rather not risk a malpractice suit. There's risk no matter how you give birth--in fact, I believe a c-section, as a surgical procedure, has more inherent risk than a vaginal birth.
That said, I had a scheduled c-section for #2

Re: What are your thoughts on VBAC's...
Having had an unexpected C-Section, I would definitely opt for a VBAC second time around.
As a matter of fact, my OB did what they call a "double suture" on my uterus to prevent a rupture should I decide to have a VBAC next time.
Pain wise I had a relatively smooth recovery from my c-section. However, there is nothing physically wrong with me to prevent having a successful vaginal delivery.
DS was what they call "sunny side up" which is why I had problems delivering him vaginally.

Re: What are your thoughts on VBAC's...
I am not yet pregnant but had a friend who ruptered. She had C-Section on #1 and then had 2 VBAC babies all healthly. Well got pregnant with #4 went into labor and planned on VBAC. While laboring in the hospital she ruptered. The baby was very sick went approx 20 mins with no oxygen and has had many complications from it. I dont think I would ever take that chance just knowing what happened to her. Even her OB said that he has never seen that happen on baby #4. Just my opinion.

Re: What are your thoughts on VBAC's...
Wow - this is a great thread.
I had an emergency c/s that was pretty difficult on me. My baby was caught in my pelvis after 3 hrs of pushing. I was 10 cm dilated, but I needed the cs anyway.
I would have loved to deliver the natural way, but I do have 2 out of 4 cousins with severe birth defects due to prolonged labor. I may opt for a scheduled cs for the following babies.

Re: What are your thoughts on VBAC's...
I didn't have a strong desire for a vaginal birth the first time... I didn't even write up a "birth plan" of any sort, because to me I didn't want to dictate a situation where I may not know best. I figured I would just go with the flow. It ended up a c-sec, and went very smoothly.
With that in mind, there's no reason I'd suddenly push (no pun intended) for a vaginal birth this second time around!

Re: What are your thoughts on VBAC's...
I had a wonderful c-section...I swear I took one dose of ibprofren just incase I could not handle pain when spinal wore off...but nothing after that.
completely painfree, healed excellently, breastfed immediately.
If #2 were to be a c-section, that is okay.
But, I do consider it major surgery.
I do still wonder what natural childbirth would be like.
I have zero interest in ever being induced, I would always opt for a c-section.
Something in me just wants the chance to go into labor and experience it.
(Its all that business of being born love cocktail!!! I want it. I know my body did not have it for days afterwards)
So...as it stands, I have an ob gyn practice next door to me, 3 midwives...totally convinent. So, I will see what they say, if there is any hesitation on VBAC, then fine...I will look forward to my perfectly shaped head on my c-section baby.
But I think I would try a vbac if they were on board.

Re: What are your thoughts on VBAC's...
I had NO interest in having a VBAC, so when it was time to discuss my birthing options, I went straight for the c-section. Too many risks.

Re: What are your thoughts on VBAC's...
I attempted a VBAC with my second and am SO glad I did. Even though I ended up with another section (I would have even if it were not a VBAC attempt, the fact that it was a VBAC had NOTHING to do with why I had a section the 2nd time).
It depends on the reason for your first section. If it was a failed induction, then you are a pretty great candidate.
Talk to your doctor or talk to a midwife. GL
