Girls who had an amnio....
What was your experience like? Any advice?
I just saw my OB tonight and both he and my RE advise an amnio. I had IVF and since the risks are slighly greater of there being a problem, they both suggest I have this done. I am a nervous wreck. Just knowing there is a risk of miscarriage freaks me out

Re: Girls who had an amnio....
The risks are actually MUCH lower than people make it to be.
I had no problem with mine.
I will admit that I was paranoid and stayed in bed for 2 full days and only walk when necessary.. i.e. going to the bathroom.

Re: Girls who had an amnio....
I haven't had an amnio so I can't help you with that. I could imagine how scared you must be about the risk of miscarriage with an amnio especially after battling infertility.
My questions, just for you to think about, not necessarily answer outloud......If they did find something potentially wrong after an amnio...woudl you terminate the pregnancy? I think sometimes a lot of physicians push or recomend testing taht to them is so routine and normal without remember the emotional side effects and reprocussions of thoses tests.
I knwo for me, terminating a pregnancy would never be an option unless my life was at risk and therefor, I choose not to go through a lot of routine testing such as AFP and other screenings beacuase I didn't want to have unecessary worries!
I for any decision you make and that everythign turns out fine for you!

Re: Girls who had an amnio....
i had an amnio with my 1st and a cvs with my 2nd. your anixety before hand is the worst part. it does sting a bit, but is over pretty quick. i found that the amino was easier than the cvs. good luck i hope everything turns out okay.

Re: Girls who had an amnio....
I had an amnio wih my DD and it wasnt bad at all. Over very quick a little pressure but before I knew it it was over! And yes just like above poster i did stay off my feet for 2 days after the amnio. The waiting for the results was the hardest part because it takes a week or two.. Good luck and you will do fine and baby will be great and perfect!

Re: Girls who had an amnio....
I had an amnio due to an abnormal Level II finding. I would recommend this test to anyone who was considering it. It hurt me like a motherf*($er, but some people say it doesn't hurt. Having the peace of mind that all is well helped to make me enjoy this pregnancy so much more. If you have any other questions, feel free to FM me!!

Re: Girls who had an amnio....
The one tip that was given to me and was great is NOT to eat before the amnio. The baby will be calmer and not move around that much.

i agree and same here...
the dr. who performed the procedure said i could go about my business as usual afterwards, my OB disagreed and suggest i take it a little easy...but nothing like needing to stay in bed for a couple of days.
some people liken the experience to getting a booster shot in the tummy. i didn't think it hurt that much at all. the actual needle in and out was only about 30 seconds. the ultrasound prior to figure out where to go in is what takes some time...
good luck, hope everything turns out a-okay!

Re: Girls who had an amnio....
Just a reminder ladies, the OP was asking for experiences from those who have had an amnio- NOT what everyone else would do.
To the OP: I had an amnio and was scared shltless. I had a nice long talk with the genetic counselor who explained the risks as well as the entire procedure. The risks for m/c at my genetic clinic was actually 1/800 (much lower than the 1/200 chance most people assume).
It DID hurt me- but was totally bearable. I have spoken to others who barely felt anything. It was a weird kind of pain, like an ache rather than sharp shooting pain. It only lasted a second though.
Afterwards, I was crampy for the rest of the day (totally expected and normal) and took it easy for the next 3 days.
If I am blessed with another pregnancy, I will opt for this testing again. The relief I got *knowing* all was well far outweighed the minimal risks of m/c for me.
Good luck with whatever you decide.....

It's much more than that though. DH and I wouldn't terminate if g-d forbid anything were wrong. But we had a very lengthy discussion with my OB about it, and she reminded us that in the event you did have a child with Downs, you want to be prepared. You want to do research and find the best specialty doctors you can (i.e. neurologist, cardiologist, etc).
I also got pregnant through IVF and know that it's not so much the risks being higher, but there is a greater chance of false positives on tests such as the AFP/quad triple screen. Chances are we are going to opt NOT to have an amnio, and my doctor won't push it unless my quad screen results come back abnormally low in two weeks. I had very good results with the ultrascreen, so we are not overly concerned.

I had one and it isnt THAT bad. It was a little more uncomfortable than I expected afterward, but the procedure itself wasnt bad at all.

Thank you for saying that. It is not for anyone to say or ask what a person is prepared to do with the results. It is obvious that a person has to be prepared what to do with the results if they are willing to take a risky test in the first place.
I had an amnio knowing full well what I would do with the results. Despite the fact that ALL of my risk factors decreased after every test before it, I still opted to have it. My reasons were personal and private and YES people DID discourage me from having it. I have ZERO regrets about doing it. For me, the benefits outweighed the risks and I had full confidence in the competency of my doctors.
My amnio was performed in my OB's office. A perinatologist (high risk OB) ran the sonogram machine while the OB placed the needle in my abdomen. It was very uncomfy for me because I had A LOT of loose skin from a big weight loss years before so I liken it to trying to pop a partially deflated balloon. I was uncomfy and put myself on bedrest for 2 days when I personally (everyone is different) should have taken 3 days.
We will surely have an amnio when we have our second child.

Re: Girls who had an amnio....
I also had an amnio because of abnormal results in our AFP testing. I think it's presumptuous to assume that a decision to have one goes hand and hand with the decision to terminate the pregnancy. We decided to have the amnio because IF we had a baby with Downs Syndrome than things we're going to have to be very different and we needed the time to prepare for those changes. We did not intend on terminating the pregnancy.
But to answer your original question it really wasn't that bad. The waiting before and after for the results was much worse. You felt the needle go in, I won't lie about that. But you get to watch your baby the whole time which makes the whole process a lot easier.
I wish you luck with your decision. It's not an easy one, but in the end you'll decide what is right for you and your family.

Re: Girls who had an amnio....
I had an amnio with my first and just had it done again with my second. My advice - don't have the numbing shots before hand. I chose not to have them with the second one and it went much quicker and was less painful. The numbing shots hurt more than the amnio. I was actually suprised that the amnio didn't really hurt. The anxiety is much worse than the actual procedure.

Re: Girls who had an amnio....
I had an amnio done due to a couple of factors and honestly it was painful (at least for me it was). You do feel a little cramping as they put the needle thru your belly however it is over so quick.
As some of the others have said- the risks of miscarriage is not really high.
We did amnio due to our ages , IVF PG and family history . For us it made sense now if we didn't have all of those factors I probably would not have done it.
Good luck!
