How far is your OB, hospital?

I've moved to a new area recently and I'm looking into a new OBGYN. I've already been to one but I think I want an office that's centrally located between home and work. (had a chemical pregnancy but I'm back to TTCing)

The hospital that's closest to me (15 minute drive) - I'm not wild about the location of the OBGYN office affiliated with it - such a pain to get there to and from work with their limited hours.

Another doctor's office is literally minutes from work, but 20 minutes from me. If I choose this office, their hospital is a half hour from my house.

So, my question is - How far do you travel to your doctor/hospital? Was that a factor at all in deciding who your doctor should be? I guess I'm thinking of the big day Chat Icon - won't I want to be close to my hospital? Or is a half hour not a big deal?

TIA!

Re: How far is your OB, hospital?

My OB is about 20 minutes away from home and less than a 3 minute drive from my office. My hospital is the same distance as it's right across the street from my OB's office.

I'm about 45 minutes from both my OB's office and the hospital. We recently moved and I didn't want to change doctors because I really love her. Hopefully DH will drive fast when the time comes! Chat Icon

Same here. I've timed it. I live on the Nassau/Suffolk border on the South shore and my doctor is in Great Neck and I am giving birth at LIJ.

The distance is no biggy to me because I know I will be in good hands.

Besides, if I go naturally, my doctor said I am not going to need to "rush" to the hospital anyways because first-time births usually last for hours and hours. Don't know whether to Chat Icon or Chat Icon about that one!!!

Re: How far is your OB, hospital?

frankly, I shop for Dr's and hospitals by their reputation and CV's.... not their location. Scone's pediatrician is 30 min away... but is an amazing Dr.

that being said, I'm super-duper lucky to live in port jeff and work at SBU. 5 min from home (towards work) is one of the top 100 Dr's (all specialties, not just OBs) in NYS. (My OB has been voted by her peers as the OB they would want for their family members.)

She is affiliated with SBU hospital, which has a first rate NICU unit, private rooms, and has embraced midwifery...

I would have traveled long distances for the hospital and my OB, but mercifully, I don't have to for once!

Matter of fact, if I enter labor at work, I can literally hobble across campus and go to the 8th floor of the hospital Chat Icon

Re: How far is your OB, hospital?

We live an hour away- with NO traffic!

We moved when I was 32 weeks pg with DD#1, so there was no way I was switching. Then my OB was so amazing during my labor and delivery that I wouldn't dream of changing for #2.

Plus, my hospital has the best NICU in the state, which is a huge deciding factor for me.

It also doesn't hurt that my hospital is as cushy as a hotelChat Icon .

My ob and hospital were about 45 mins away with no traffic. I think the doctor and hospital are more important than distance.

Re: How far is your OB, hospital?

i was 5 minutes from my OB and 5 minutes from the hospital. they are 5 minutes in different directions from my house.

it was important to me that they be close in case i had an emergency. luckily i didn't, and i would have been okay with one farther, but i didn't want to chance it.

Re: How far is your OB, hospital?

Hmm, this is a tricky question. We and the hospital are both in the city, so it's a crapshoot depending on time of day and what mode of transportation. Chat Icon My Dr. and hospital are only 10 blocks from each other, both on the east side so very close to each other. We, on the other hand, are on the complete opposite side of town and way uptown from there, so I'd say if no traffic it's a 10 minute drive, if traffic, who knows, it could be an hour. Chat Icon Chat Icon If we took the subway, probably around 1/2 hour maybe....

Re: How far is your OB, hospital?

I wanted a good doctor/hospital that would also have a convenient location for all of my appts.

I figured I would be going there a lot more often for appts than for delivery.

I live in Bellmore, but I work in downtown Manhattan. I chose a doctor at Cornell on the Upper East Side.

I was far from my house, but it was much better for me than leaving work early and dragging myself all the way back to LI everytime I had an appt.
