Does bigger belly mean bigger baby?

I know everyone is shaped differently. Some girls have a lot larger of a baby belly.

Does that mean that their baby will likely be bigger/heavier when they are born?

Or does that mean that they just have a larger placenta or perhaps more fluids in their middle?

Does larger belly mean most likely that you will have more weight to lose after the baby is born?

Sorry for the silly questions. I'm just curious and have nowhere else to ask.

Re: Does bigger belly mean bigger baby?

For me...so far...the estimates suggest a bigger baby. I am carrying all in front and have only gained 16 pounds at almost 37 weeks...they are predicting a 9 pounder at this point if I go to term!

Re: Does bigger belly mean bigger baby?

I don't necessarily think larger belly = larger baby. I think everyone carries the weight they've gained differently.

In my situation, 32 weeks, I've gained a little over 20 lbs and it's all gone to my belly. I also have GD. My belly looks big, feels big lol and the doctor tells me my baby is also on the bigger side. I definitely knew he was on the bigger side because of how much my belly has grown and how much stronger he feels to me with his movements all day long. I've had friends though that have gained alot more weight than me but their weight has spread all over their bodies and their bellies weren't as big so I definitely think it varies woman to woman.

So far at 20 weeks I haven't gained alot of weight but I'm ALL belly and all right in front. They said at my Level II that he's a big baby already so I'll likely have a big baby. So, in my case, yes, big belly looks like it will equal big baby...but, i haven't gained alot of weight to go along with it, or anywhere else on my body, so I'm not too worried yet (knock on wood) about having alot to lose after he's born.

Re: Does bigger belly mean bigger baby?

I'm having twins and at 27 weeks they weighed 2.5 lbs each so yes, I think my babies will be at least 6 lbs which is great for twins. I read somewhere that wehen you are pregnant with multiples you are about 6 weeks ahead of a single pregnancy in the way you look.

Re: Does bigger belly mean bigger baby?

I don't know if it correlates or not. A friend of mine gained close to 50+ pounds her son, most of it was out front, and he was not a huge baby by any stretch of the imagination....granted she was not happy that the 50+ pounds was not the baby Chat Icon

I dont know the actual facts, but in my case with DS, everyone told me how big I was (I'm only 5-2 so it was all up front) and I did go on to have a 9-12 baby (2 weeks early almost)....Everyone is telling me how big I am already this time too so who knows !

ETA- as far as your question about losing the weight after the baby is born, I actually went down under my pre-pregnancy weight in a relatively short period of time and much of it came off before I even left the hospital Chat Icon

50 pounds?!?!?! Do you know how much she lost at birth?

Was she very skinny? I was told that thinner girls gain more weight.

nope, she was average just like me, and she mentions every time she sees me that she hates me Chat Icon , BUT she is also very aware that she went a bit nuts...and I saw it myself....she went nuts and thought she could get away with eating anything and everything at all times....she didnt' lose antyhing at birth bc she had a c section and was full of water weight after wards, she was not a happy camper in the least!!!! She claims that she is very narrow, meaning hips and thats why most of the weight she put on she did..which to be honest I think is BS, she's not ultra narrow, shes avg height and avg weight, not too skinny or anything...

Re: Does bigger belly mean bigger baby?

I have a very small belly-- strangers don't know I am pregnant, unless I am perhaps wearing something that really accentuates my belly.

When I had my Level II (at 21.5 weeks), I was told the bay was 14 to 15 oz, and was in the 30th percentile for size. After that, I posted on here to see if anyone else got the weight of the baby at their Level II's-- and the weight of the baby seemed pretty comparable to everyone else.

I have gained about 17 lbs or so already at almost 24 weeks-- and it's going to other places in my body I guess!

Re: Does bigger belly mean bigger baby?

I had a very small belly and a pretty small baby- he was 6lbs 8oz when he arrived at 39 weeks. He's just a peanut!! And at 10 days post-partum I only have 9 lbs to go to be back to my pre-preggo weight Chat Icon

Re: Does bigger belly mean bigger baby?

According to my DR what you gain doesn't relate to what the baby's size will be. He said you could gain 15 pounds and have a 10 pound baby, or gain 70 pounds and have a 5 pound baby. The baby just takes what it needs and your body does whatever your body is going to do.

I don't think so. A friend of mine got pretty big and she had a 6 pound baby. I carried very small and had an 8 pound baby. Everyone's body is different.

Same for me except I'm 34 weeks. I've only gained 7 lbs but I have quite the belly and at 32w my baby was measuring 6lb 2oz which is huge. My friend gained 45lbs and delivered her 5lb son at 33w. I just think everyone is different!

Re: Does bigger belly mean bigger baby?

Not necessarily!

It could be but not in my case. DS was 7Lbs 13 oz. Not average! I was mostly all belly (except the bad swelling in my feet!). I am short and have very limited space in my torso. The baby had not choice to be go outward.

Re: Does bigger belly mean bigger baby?

I gained 35 lbs with DD and was mostly belly (although I did gain some in my hips and thighs) and DD was only 6 lbs 4 oz. I have no idea how much I lost after birth since I didn't weigh myself.

With this pregnancy, I have only gained 5 lbs in 20 weeks (and I don't think that I have gained too much more in the 4 weeks since my last visit). I think that my body might not get as big, but that the baby will be around the same size.

Re: Does bigger belly mean bigger baby?

i was tiny with both my pregnancies. didnt start wearing matenity clothes till my 7th month. i gained exactly 30 pounds with each of my pregnancies. with my first pregnancy my dd was 9lbs. with my second pregnancy my ds was 8.2ozs and he was born a week early. So belly size did not mean small baby in my case. lol.
