untenured teachers
i am an LI teacher who just got a probationary position this year. unfortunately i am almost 30 so i cannot wait until tenure to become pregnant. does anyone know exactly how much time an untenured teacher gets for leave, and how likely it is to lose my job?? Or does it vary between school districts? I dont wanna ask anyone at my school because rumors will fly.

A school cannot get rid of you if you are PG.
It is against the law.

I also started teaching this year and am planning to get pregnant this summer. I will be 29 and DH will be 38- the both of us have been waiting for a while to have a baby. I was a little nervous being untenured, but, as Diane said, you have to do what you have to do- this is your life. They can not get rid of you for being PG and I have known other people who are untenured that have been fine.
As far as maternity leave, look in your contract. Isn't it three months in most schools?

I understand your concern. I have seen untenured teachers get pregnant in my building and all was fine. You never know how long it could take to get pregnant, so I think you should try as planned. If you are good at your job you will not be in jeopardy. Everyone has the right to have a family. Good Luck!

There have been many untenured teachers in my district that got pregnant and kept their jobs. In my district you only get paid for sick time that you have accumulated, tenured or not. Untenured teachers receive the 6 or 8 weeks, and also can get the Family Leave Act of up to 12 weeks. But my district counts your first 6 weeks as part of the 12. I think some districts might do that differently. Good luck!

My district has the same policy. We are hoping to get preggo next fall so that I will be due in July - to help minimize any time off that I need, as I will also be untenured at that point. Of course, a brand new teacher tried that this year, and by November had to go out on bedrest - I have no clue if she is being invited back or not. It is scary, but sometimes I think it looks worse if you get tenure and then BAM the next month you are pregnant.
