The missing NYC teacher

I'm a lil late I guess in finding out about this. I halfly saw it on the news last nite as I was passing out and found this newslink today

missing teacher

I thought this was interesting because they say she might have been dissatisfied with her job working in harlem. I too felt unhappy with my job last year and sorta went MIA from school for a few days at a time, of course I would actually call in sick though, and tried to make it through.

They pointed out that she is a teaching fellow, a veteran teacher i worked with told me something interesting that kinda clicks with this. He said that teaching fellows that work here (in harlem) tend to be middle-class white teachers from out of state who most likely went to an ivy league school and have never been in an urban setting. The kids here give them a run for their money. What usually happens is that they quit mid-year or are absent a lot. (The teaching fellow in my school was absent even more than I was).

I dunno I really hope that she is okay and maybe did have just a meltdown. I guess I can kinda relate somewhat. But what are your thoughts on the story?

Something is odd. I heard that she's been spotted a couple times in midtown. I wonder where she is staying- if it was a hotel she'd need to be using cash because she could be tracked through a credit card.

I work in the South Bronx- it was an adjustment being in that setting. I have met teachers- TFA, Fellows, people who came in through traditional means- struggle. But not to the point where you'd let your friends and family worry like that about you. And my understanding is that she's in a decent school- not one of those crazy hellholes.

I agree it is very odd. When I would go MIA it was usually because I had a panic attack and I wouldnt verbally speak to anyone not even my family, but i lived with them, I kept to myself and locked myself in my room and just really sat and thought about what was going on in my life. So i do understand that maybe she might be in a trance like state, i know i was, and i did things like go on the internet, which she has been spotted doing, but all other forms of reality just wasnt there for me. of course her case is different but I dunno.

I also find it interesting that bloomberg spoke about it (dont remeber what he said tho) and that the UFT put up a reward for her and such.

Also teaching in general is something you master overtime, yes some places are tougher than others, but I think we can all agree those first few years are no piece of cake no matter where u are.

Re: The missing NYC teacher

What an odd situation. I feel bad for her no matter what the real story is. I find it really extreme to stage a disappearance though just because of hating your job, I mean if that were the case she could just resign, it's not like she's working now anyway. The fact that nobody including family seems to know what happened to her is really scary. If she hadn't been seen on surveillance I'd think she'd been a victim of a crime. Maybe she is mentally unstable or something like that, I don't know. I feel really bad for her though.

Re: The missing NYC teacher

I heard that her friends say she may have joined some fringe group called Freegans who look in dumpsters for foodChat Icon

And that she was spotted twice in midtown. If you really don't want to teach just quit but come forward for your family's sake

I agree, but from the behaviors she's exhibiting, i think it's more thatn being dissatisfied with the job. I tihnk she may be mentally ill.

That could definitly be it. I'm interested in finding out the outcome. As long as in the end shes found and pretty much "okay" thats all that matters.

Re: The missing NYC teacher

I was a teaching fellow, and at the time I finished, 90+% of the people in the fellowship graduated with me.

Amongst them were people from Brooklyn, Philly, Queens, Long Island, D.C. Everyone came from different types of schools, backgrounds and age brackets.

My first 2 years were tough. Not because of where I grew up, but because of the lack of help from administration, the pressure to do bulletin boards (and other BS "showy" stuff), and lastly the behavior problems in my class.

And after 3 years of teaching with NYC, I called in sick no more than 2 times a year.

ETA: Sorry to bump an old thread but this came up when I did a search for missing teacher.

Re: The missing NYC teacher

I felt really sorry for her.
She definitely behaved irrationally though. Didn't they rescue her from the water when she was trying to kill herself? (I'm not sure but I think I remember this) If that's the case then she had some serious psychological problems. I hope she received help.
