writing decimals in word form question...
.900 = nine hundred thousandths
**ok, this has been driving me crazy since yesterday and I think I need to let it go. I know that .900 means the same as .9 but isn't .9 the reduced form? If I had a model of 1,000 squares and 900 were shaded in, the fraction would be 900/1,000 (with the word form as "nine hundred thousandths") and the decimal would be .900 (I would kick off the last two zeros to make it .9) Then again, if I wrote .900 in expanded form it would be .9 + .00 +.000 which shows that the zeros aren't necessary. --but if I was to shade in one more box on my model of 1,000 the new fraction would be 901/1,000 and the decimal would be .901
.00009= nine hundred-thousandths
The hyphen makes the difference, right?

yes, but if you add the zeros you can say nine hundred thousandths.
the second one would be:
nine HUNDRED THOUSANDTHS. It can't be the same as the first because the 9 is in a completely different place as the first example. I have never seen a hyphen before and do not believe that is correct.
decimal place values are the same as whole numbers except you start with tens and not ones and ADD the "ths."
so for example:
.9 is nine tenths
.09 is nine hundredths
.009 is nine thousandths
.0009 is nine ten thousandths
.00009 is nine hundred thousandths
.000009 is nine millionths,
ETC....

maybe I'm reading your response wrong, but it doesn't matter how many zeroes you put after the 9 in the first one, it's still nine-tenths.
.9 = .9000 = .9000000
and the second one is nine hundred thousandths. I think you just typed the upper part of your response wrong, because the bottom part is correct.

.9 is the same thing as .900000000000000. you can put as many zeroes on the back end but its still nine-tenths.

9/10s is the same as 900/1000s. you don't need the zeros but if you put them you just read the number differently. so even though .9=.900 you would not say .900 as "nine tenths", you would say it as "nine-hundred thousandths" because there is 900 filling up places till the thousandths place
to the original poster's question - .009 is nine thousandths. no hundreds involved.
.00009 would be "nine hundred thousandths".
i think the hyphen goes between the nine-hundred for .900 and not between the hundred thousandths for the .00009

Thanks... i fixed it... it is nine hundred thousandths. and yes, you're right it is still always nine tenths, but putting the zeros on the end would give the option to say it the other way in addition to saying it as nine tenths.

See, this is where I'm confused. Yes, 9/10 is equivalent to 900/1,000. The first fraction would be "nine tenths" but the second (even though it's equivalent to 9/10) would be "nine hundred thousandths"(if we saw 900/1,000 as a fraction, we would still say, "nine hundred thousandths"). I thought the hyphen differentiated .900 from .00009.I'm not sure if this is correct:
