Does anyone have a low platelet count?

My platelets are low - they vary from 50 thousand to 100 thousand. After a bunch of tests coming back normal, the diagnosis is that my body attacks the platelets. I can never take an aspirin.

If the count gets to 30,000 then I have to go on a steroid.

Anyone else experience this?

Is it ITP? My daughter had it when she was younger.

Re: Does anyone have a low platelet count?

My daughter had it when she was 3 as a result of having a virus. Her platelet count went as low as 2,000. They gave her steroids, which didn't help too much - so eventually she ended up in the hospital having other treatments (IVIG, WinRo). It took about 5 months and then she was back to normal - and she's been fine ever since - knock on wood (she's 11 now). They say

Did they mention to you if it will ever go away?

Re: Does anyone have a low platelet count?

We have ITP in our family. My platelets haven't gone below 50,000, but my mother and brother both went below 10,000. We can never take aspirin and never have. It sucks when doctors want you to go on an anti-inflammatory (after surgery, for example) and you can't.

The only other thing we have to watch for is scheduling any procedures when we don't have our period. (ie: going to the dentist, surgery, etc.) When you have your period, you have a better chance at bleeding in any other areas of your body.
