permanent certification Help!

My provisional certification expires in February and i just mailed in my video. I passed all the tests, is their anything else I need to do? If the state doesn't approve by permanent certification by February do I lose my certification even if I completed all the requirements? I'm so worried I'll lose my job, this deadline snuck up on me. I'd appreciate any info you have. TIA!

Re: permanent certification Help!

i don't think you would lose your job... most districts understand how long everything takes to be cleared by Albany. As long as it's in by February, I would think you should be good.

Also for permanent cert. you need at least 2 years full-time teaching area in the certification area that you're requesting certification in, the tests and a Masters degree.

As long as everything is in, you'll be fine with your district. On the website it will indicate that they received it and that it is being processed. I remember mine taking a really long time before they processed it...atleast 8 months.

I am in a similar situation. I handed everything in and applied a month ago, but haven't heard anything. I am going to call BOCES and/or the state to ask, b/c if the provisional certification expires in February, are we then still eligible for the permanent certification, if we have applied before the expiration date? I am not sure, so I am double checking. I wonder if we will have to file an extension. If I were you, i would call them as well.

Re: permanent certification Help!

If you mailed everything in they will date your certification from when they received the last requirement. So I mailed in everything by Sept 1 and though they processed it later on my perm cert says sept 1, 2006. If you let it expire without completing all the requirements then you will fall into the "new" requirements and no longer will be able to obtain a perm cert.

I put in my application for permanent certification back in early August and it still hasn't been processed. I think you'll most likely have a lapse, so I would attempt to call Albany or BOCES and ask them what you should do. Try to call, but omg, how many times I've tried to call state ed and just been hung up on... it's outrageous. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I was a little late mailing all of my paperwork (maybe may or June for February) and I got it no problem and it was backdated to Feb.

You can call your HR and ask them to expedite it as well. My second cert got caught in a hole, but as soon as my district called, it was taken care of in 2 days (after waiting 7+ months!)

Thank you all for your help, I feel a little better now. Is their an actual application I need to fill out for permanent certification? I filled out all the info on my Masters Degree and teaching experience on the TEACH website. Is there anything else?

Yes. You need to actually apply on the TEACH website for the certification. You pay $100 to apply. They don't automatically mail you the permanent certification, you have to apply and pay.

yep... you can use a credit card and pay on-line so you don't have to send anything up to the state except the video --- provided they have everything else on file...
