Pet insurance...

I'm thinking about it. Routine care on mundane things has cost me hundreds at the vet - which I don't mind at all, it comes with the territory - but I'm looking toward the future. Our dog's breed in particular comes with some common problems - eye problems, elbow and hip dysplasia to name a few.

In doing some preliminary looking, I found out some companies require you to sign up in their first year.

If you have insurance, would you mind sharing the particulars - # of pets covered, premiums, coverage, exclusions, if you've used it and had any problems?

Thanks. Chat Icon

Re: Pet insurance...

I use VPI pet insurance. I don't believe you need to buy it w/in the first year. All my friends use this company too. It has been great and I get my refund in a timely manner. I pay $30 per month, my dog is little though and I got it right away. But it covers a good amount. I highly recommend insurance. For me it was knowing that she was covered if anything major hjappend. I would hate not to be able to do a procedure due to $$$$

I have VPI also. I think you can buy it after the first year but the monthly premium will be a little higher. I pay around $30 a month.

Re: Pet insurance...

I have VPI. I got it as soon as I got my puppy. She is 3 and a half and I pay about $35 per month and that includes routine coverage - which they are great about reimbursing!

HOWEVER...I have a yorkie and she tore something like a ligament in her knee and they did NOT cover her $2500 surgery because they said that type of injury is very common for those dogs and therefore kind of like a "pre-existing condition".

So if your type of breed is pre disposed to certain things make sure you find out first if those would even be covered!

Either way its worth it for vaccines and check ups, bloodwork, etc

I have a yorkie too and needed to get surgery for a Luxating (sp?) Patella (dislocation of his knee) and this was NOT covered by the insurance because its considered "pre-existing"....i was a tad bit p'od about that! The surgery was so expensive!!!

Thats what it was!! I forgot the name. But I can remember the amount of the surgery. That is burned into my brain. I had no idea that things like that wouldn't be covered.

To the OP, this is why I would definitely suggest looking into your specific breed and finding out what they don't cover for your breed. It might still be worth it, but at least know ahead of time JIC.
