random question about credits in addition to masters degree and salary scales
Do the credits have to be directly related to your content area or to education?
Say your salary scale goes up to Masters + 90. If you have a JD (law degree - well over 90 credits) and a masters in elementary education, would you qualify for the masters + 90 as an elementary school teacher or just masters since the law degree is arguably unrelated?
Would it depend on the district?
Don't worry. No need to hide your children - I'm asking for a friend. I don't have any education degree!

Re: random question about credits in addition to masters degree and salary scales
it would depend on the disitrct. Most districts require that it be a related degree. most teachers after the masters degree earn credits through a second education-related masters OR teacher in-service courses that count for credit.
my husband has a JD and left law to teach. He works in NYC. he was only credited for a master's degree while his JD was obviously a lot more credits than that. luckily though, since he is now getting his Masters in Ed. he will then be at the end of the scale when he's done with that, so in that sense, the credits from the law degree defintiely paid off.
districts on a budget (which most are) have the discretion to not recognized all 60+ credits of a JD. most won't.

Depends on the district - I have heard some districts not count JD's b/c they are not education related - which is BS
the worst part is you really don't know until you go into sign your paperwork/contract - and it's trickier to keep looking for another job then.

In my district, courses need to be approved before you take them. I'm not sure about an additional degree though.
