Where does someone begin looking into Adoption?
Where do you start? How much does it cost? And how long of a wait?
I'm sorry if the questions are inappropriate. I just do not know where to begin?

Re: Where does someone begin looking into Adoption?
hi! i'm haven't started the adoption process yet, but i've known since i was young that i can't have bio kids, so i've been looking into adoption for awhile now. i have ALWAYS ( since i was young) wanted to adopt from china.. but i've been reading that the wait is almost 3 years now... not willing to wait quite that long! so now i started looking into adoption in the US. i think if you just do a google search for adoption, a lot of stuff will come up. i think theres one site, i think its adoption.com... that has a lot of info. if you have an idea of what country you want to adopt from you can also do a search for that. yahoo also has a lot of message boards and chat groups about adoption, too- good way to get info from people in the process. the cost depends on the country, agency, etc... but i've read it can get as high as $30 or $40,000. a lot of agencies have intro nights where you can go to get information, meet the staff, etc. like i said, i haven't actually started the process yet, but we're hoping to start soon so i've been doing a lot of searching around online, etc. GOOD LUCK whatever you decide!!

Re: Where does someone begin looking into Adoption?
I just adopted a child this past September. I did it through Foster Care. It costs you nothing. Foster care picks up the entire cost including the attorney you pick and all filing fee's with the courts. You can pick the sex, age and everything else. Good luck to you. Elaine

A good friend of mine adopted 2 children rom foster care and had to pay her own attorney and filing fees. Yes the wait is shorter if you foster a child and then end up adopting, but not all children in foster care are available for adoption. Most placements are temporary. You would have to become foster parents to go this route though. GL!

I called Suffolk County Social Services to discuss their adoption/foster program. There are children that they call "legally free" to be adopted, meaning their parents/guardians have given up their legal rights already. If you are only interested in adoption, yes, you would have to technically become a foster parent, but it would only be for a child you wanted to adopt prior to the adoption becoming final. You would not have to have foster children in your home until you found a child. There is a seminar regarding the process in Ronkonkoma on 12/20.

You are a wondeful person to do this. I would love to, but DH doesn't support me on this. I wish you all the best. Your child is very lucky.

Re: Where does someone begin looking into Adoption?
There are sooo many options...and each comes with its own cost. Each agency has its own prices as well. The age of the child can matter when it comes to cost. I adopted my two boys from Ethiopa three years ago...I HIGHLY recommend that agency..Adoption Advocates..I was able to communicate with my boys the entire time via letters and pictures, not all agencies offer that. Some countries require you to travel for one month also. I am currently adopting through Pennsylvania foster care, which is damn near free. If you want a baby through the us, you can call agencies that specailize in that. If you have any questions..I am very well versed in the adoption process as it was such a huge decision for me!!! Just ask!

Re: Where does someone begin looking into Adoption?
DH & I adopted domestically - both children were newborns. That being said. Get yourself an attorney. there is a great adoption support group called Adoptive Parents committee (APC) you can google them. They have meetings once a month and are very helpful and informative. I can not say enough nice things about them. You will need to get certified by the state. Fingerprints, background checks, meeting with a social worker, etc. Once all clears you can start looking for your child. They are out there. With Adoption there IS a child for you at the end of the rainbow. I can not imagine my life any other way. Any further questions you can FM me. Good luck and many happy thoughts your way.
