Twilight for a 10 yr. old!
Ok,, so my sister is 10.. my mom tells me yesterday that she was going to buy the Twilight series for my sister. My sister didn't ask for it,.. the people at Barnes & Nobles told her it would make a good gift.. Sorry I am reading the last one in the series now.. and hardly think it is good reading for a 10 year old...

Re: Twilight for a 10 yr. old!
I actually don't think it's too bad.
It's VERY mild compared to other stuff out there for YA and VERY VERY mild compared to what she might see if she watched TV.
JMO.
I understand how you feel though- kids grow up WAY too fast these days.
Actually- the more I think about it- the more I agree with you. 10 is a little too young. I'd think 13 is a more appropriate age.

Re: Twilight for a 10 yr. old!
I mean if you think about the last book of the series... i would never give it to a 10 year old!!! I looked at my mom like she was crazy.. although she didnt know about them, just that they were popular.

Re: Twilight for a 10 yr. old!
Absolutely not! I already warned my SIL and my sister NOT to get it for my nieces ( 9 and 12 years old ).
Yeah yeah, I read worse stuff when I was young - bc I always read adult books BUT there is a difference between FINDING it on your own and your mother buying it for you.
LOL sorry Kim, I just basically yelled at your mom this is just something I feel strongly about.

Re: Twilight for a 10 yr. old!
i haven't read the books or seen the movie, but i know a 10 year old who is obsessed with it. and you know what, if it gets him to read (which he rarely does), i'm all for it. i was going to buy him the 2nd book for christmas but couldn't find it.
kids are more exposed to things nowadays. they see much worse on tv on a daily basis

Re: Twilight for a 10 yr. old!
both my nieces read it and nothing happened with those part. kryssy will read them when i get them back (all out on loan) and she is on a level of a 10 year old. i am not worried one little bit.

Re: Twilight for a 10 yr. old!
IMO, i think you are right - i would probably be okay with giving it to my 13 or 14-year-old, but 10 is just too young. even though there are no explicit sex scenes there is some very passionate language and behavior that i don't think is appropriate for a 10-year-old to be reading about.
i say this now, but who know what will happen when my DS is actually 10

Re: Twilight for a 10 yr. old!
I think 10 would be fine for those books if she is a good reader.
She is 10 not 5. I'm sure she knows what sex is and there is nothing at all explicitly sexual in any of the books. I'm sure she has seen and heard more on daytime soap operas and prime time tv not to mention cable!
Anything that gets kids excited about reading is a great thing and it's not like she asked for Danielle Steel or something!

Re: Twilight for a 10 yr. old!
I just feel like it is not something that we should be offering my sister. LOL... I guess that maybe just I am sheltering her. But I think she could wait a few years before she starting reading that material.
Thanks for everyones opinions.

Re: Twilight for a 10 yr. old!
I personally wouldn't let my 8 year old son read them but my friend lets her daughter the same age read all of them. I won't say it was raunchy but there were adult situations that I would rather not have my children read. The last book I feel would be totally inappropriate though.

Re: Twilight for a 10 yr. old!
I was reading much worse when I was 10 years old... I always got into my mom's stash of romance novels Not that I completely understood what most of the "scenes" were about
I think Twilight IMO is ok for a 10 year old... Its a fantasy and we need to give kids more credit for knowing whats real and whats not.

Re: Twilight for a 10 yr. old!
Yeah - there is a huge diff between finding it on your own and your parents giving it to you.
I haven't read the books but if you think it's inappropriate so be it... Show your mom the parts you are iffy about.
I'm no help - I did a diorama and book report on VC Andrews Flowers in the Attic in 5th grade. My mom obviously didn't read the book.

Re: Twilight for a 10 yr. old!
I think it is fine depending on her maturity level and reading level. Some of it might be difficult for a 10 year old in terms of the story line, length of the book, etc. I think that the sexual tone would go over her head for the most part. We all saw it as adults, but younger children probably wouldn't interpret it the same way.

Re: Twilight for a 10 yr. old!
The iterpurtation is true.. she may not see it the same. I guess I was more surprised it was reccomended by the book store.
Thanks for everyones comments. I am glad to hear both sides.. It seemed crazy to me at first.

Re: Twilight for a 10 yr. old!
I would not give it to a 10 year old and when mothers come into the library looking for it for their elementary age kids, I try to discourage it. People say it's mild compared to other YA fiction, but a 10 year old is not a young adult and does not belong in the YA section of a library or bookstore.
