Immature Eggs

Sorry, this post is a quite long, and I have to break them into 2 threads…
Dr. K called me yesterday to follow up on my fertilization report. As much as I appreciated his call, I knew he always calls me when he has bad news.
He started by saying that he had never experienced my case before, and had only read about cases like mine in the literature (how nice….). He said from my blood, sono, and retrieval, everything looked good, or even better than average. Since we are doing IVF with ICSI, the lab had to clean and look at the eggs very carefully. And this is where they found the problem… He explained that my eggs were not functioning the way a normal egg should be. My eggs were small in size, and the thickness is not right (I think he said too thin). And the eggs were not maturing even after the lab cultured them. He also mentioned this has nothing to do with my endometriosis.
He basically told me it could be a waste of time and money to go through IVF again with my own egg. He will only suggest me to do it again if my insurance covers the cost. He also suggested donor eggs, which I mentioned last time I am just not ready for it yet. He also mentioned the lab actually took pictures of my eggs, and he is willing to give me all the needed info if I want to go for a 2nd opinion.

Re: Immature Eggs

I am still going to keep my appt with him next week. Hopefully by then I will have a clear mind to think through what are we going to do, and I can get all my records from them and go for a 2nd opinion.
I will have to assume that my case is rare for him to say he never experienced in his lab before, but does anyone have the same problem or heard of this problem before? I know the next question has been asked million times, but can anyone please suggest their RE to me meanwhile?
I am so crashed and scared… Chat Icon

I am so sorry you are going through this! Chat Icon Chat Icon I would recommend my RE (RSofNY) but I don't know if they are any better than where you go.

I have heard very good things about Cornell Medical Center, maybe to try them. Chat Icon

I am so sorry you are going through this. Although I am not going through exactly the same thing...I had a doctor say to me"we have never really seen this before" yesterday when he was talking about me not ovulating after a trigger. It feels awful.

I would recommend Cornell though. That is where I went for my 3rd opinion. Give them a try

Hi,
I don't know about your particular issue but I am very impressed as a new patient at NSUH (Rosenfeld is my guy). He picked up things my old RE never even considered!! Best of luck to you..

I am so sorry Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Give yourself some time to process this and then make a decision about what you want to do next. I would def. get a 2nd opinion because it can't hurt you. And it may help you make your next move.

If I were you, I would go to the original research articles in the literature. I would then contact the authors/researchers of those articles. They will know of people who are experts in your issue. Perhaps, they can even suggest some research studies that you could participate in. I would definitely start there.

Re: Immature Eggs

First of all, that is so awful and I'm sorry. I'm actually surprised that Dr. K is telling you not to do another IVF after only one cycle. Does your insurance cover IVF?

Also, I know I doctor I'm going to see on Thursday told me about new studies being done with egg quality.

I asked my RE the name of the condition that I have. But he wasn't able to give me the name on the phone. He just said "Eggs that do not mature". I will definitely ask him to show me or direct me to the literature that he is talking about. Thank you so much!

My insurance actually does cover IVF. But I have limits on them, and I really don’t wanna waste them until I think everything through, and maybe get couple of more opinions from other Dr.
Who is the RE you are going to see?

I'm going to see Dr. Braverman and actually did see Dr. K. I'm just saying, Dr. K was very quick to jump to DE with me as well. So take it with a grain of salt.

Re: Immature Eggs

Don't give up hope. I had a very similar cycle as you just a couple of weeks ago. With LI-IVF too. Interesting but I won't go there right now.

You have FM.

OMG, I am so sorry, I don't post on here that often, but Dr. K was my doc in the past and I was successful. I am very surprised, he doesn't want you to try again, if you have insurance coverage, I would definately try again and make sure it is not a fluke. I googled your situation and found a few sites:

http://yedda.com/questions/Immature_eggs_egg_retrieval_5185103816841#answers

and I found this article about a rare condition where all oocytes are immature and they didn't mature in the lab, this may be what he is talking about.

http://humrep.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/reprint/16/11/2394

I am sure we are all keeping our fingers crossed, I remember Dr K was sometimes quick to jump with decisions, but I felt he was always trying to do what he thought was best and it worked for me. :)

I'm on IVF connections and I did find someone similar to us. She is actually going to cycle with Cornell in January. I'll let you know how it goes for her. She's seeing Dr. Davis. He's hoping that a different protocol will help her.
