Alopecia Areata
Is anyone have it or familiar with it?
The dermatologist I saw today thinks that is what I have (I found a bald spot a couple of weeks ago).
Any information would be great - thanks!!!

Re: Alopecia Areata
I had this! It is your own body's immune system attacking itself, specifically the hair follicles.
Believe it or not, I had a pencil eraser sized bald spot (in my pubic region, odd place!) that kept appearing. The dermatologist gave me a cortisone cream and when i would religiously use it, the hair would grow back. When I would stop, the hair woudl fall out.
I panicked and thought I was going to get it all over, that it would spread, to my head, etc. It never did, this was years ago, and I don't get the bald spot anymore without using the cream. Weird, but it happens (could be stress related from what I know). HTH

Re: Alopecia Areata
I have a friend that has Alopecia. When he was about 23 years old all his hair started to fall out. He has not one spec of hair on his body now. It did start to grow back one summer but by the end of the summer, it had all fallen back out again.
I am by no means an expert on this condition and I hope his case is just an extreme form.
Im sure your doctor can provide a better explanation. I wish you the best

This is Alopecia totalis I believe. My Dhs cousin has this. Alopecia areata is just spots, not total body hair loss. Areata generally doesn't become total body hair loss.

Re: Alopecia Areata
a few years back my dad had it. He started having bald spots all over his head.
He went a few times for the injections and his hair grew back.
