Re: How did you find/get your first teaching job?

First off - Congrats on finishing up your program!

In order to get my first job, I did basically everything possible

1. Mailed my resume to every district I was interested in whether or not they had a position open (unless on their website it specifically said not to do so).

2. Searched every school's website for job postings.

3. OLAS

4. Hand delivered to a few places where I really wanted to work

In the end I was offered two jobs: one was in the district I student taught in and the other was for a position posted on a school's website.

My biggest suggestion is to have lots of people look over your resume. I have received many compliments on mine and have been told it really is a HUGE selling point.

(I have worked at three different schools in the past three years due to the relocation of my DH's job. Hoping to stay put this year - job searching is tiring!)

My grad school, Hofstra, had something that was jointly run through the School of Ed and the Career Center in which you could have your resume sent to several distrticts. Some arranged on campus interviews, some just kept them on file. My district had it one file and I got the job that summer.

Good luck!!!!!

I did this at Hofstra also and got quite a few interviews, but no one I knew ever heard anything back from this (with the exception of being offered a job from NYC on the spot) I did think it was a good way to get more comfortable interviewing though.

Re: How did you find/get your first teaching job?

Make sure your resume is user-friendly. You don't need to write "reference available upon request." It's assumed that if asked, you can find people to vouch for you. No funky fonts, no crazy colors. Ditto for your cover letter. Make sure your cover letter talks about how your experiences relate to the job you're applying for.

Don't mail your resume to districts that post on OLAS. They just toss the paper resumes. Save the stamp and the $9-a-box resume paper for districts that are still accepting paper apps.

Get yourself on sub lists for several school districts.

Talk to your professors. Networking is key here.

Research the schools that are interviewing you. They'll invariably ask, "So what do you know about *** district?" and you don't want to sit there silently. Bring your portfolio, with letters of rec, your "greatest hits" of lessons, etc to every interview. They probably won't look, but it makes you look prepared.

GOOD LUCK!

Re: How did you find/get your first teaching job?

I started before the email/OLAS/Online applications. I sent resumes (and hand delivered) to districts I was interested. I also sent resumes to the top NYC high schools. I took a permanant sub job (from NYT listing) and updated and resent my resume and that got me the job at one of the NYC HS's - they later told me that they were impressed that I sent a revised resume.

I delivered my resumes in person. I came dressed professionally.

At my current job, I met the principal the day I dropped off my resume and got the job soon after.

Re: How did you find/get your first teaching job?

I applied to every single district that would accept my application. I'm out of state, so this may be different for you, but I included my recommendations, since most of the applications specified that I should.
